Storage of , wheat , rice and other grain

A few years back I read that if one would drop some dry ice in the container in which grain was to be stored , then add the grain , the dry ice vapor would drive out the oxygen and make the grain " bug proof " and deter moisture problems . Haven't heard any more on it in years .... any ideas ?

  • I am so new here I feel funny posting a reply, But what I read is essentially the same look at
    www.captaindaves.com/foodfaq/
Lots of good info on that site.
I have also read about deep freezing your items then vaccum sealing it in small packages to prevent spoliage over time. I also read about the desiccants that are color coded red when they are dry blue when they have absorbed all they can. Then they can be reused. I like products that cater to my small brain:)
  • I've heard about the dry ice thing before. Isnt it kind of expensive? I might just eat the bug's too.
    • LOL... I don't know about the cost of the ice now but my Dad used it to transport fish and keep them fresh years ago . I feel it would only take a small piece to do the job . Once it is in and melts ...or what ever it does .... the container is sealed until the grain is to be used .
      • yeah honestly, I have no problem eating bugs in the grain. They're made of grain. Probably change it into better things for your body anyhow.

I mean, I'd prefer my oatmeal without worms...but if things got to where I was living out of my food storage, I wouldn't waste any grain just cause some bugs got into it. Boil em up just the same. probably wouldn't even notice em if I wasn't looking while I was eating.
