I was given someone's opinion / concern on this topic as they are wondering what to do / get . We legal gun owners , in this group of friends, learned on the M-16 and M-1Garand . We own AR -15's . We do not have one single AK 47 . period . Years ago it was decided ( group wide ) not to get anymore . 223's but to all go with the . 308 caliber . One size ammo so sharing is simplified . This enabled elk hunting as well as the smaller deer . From our training perspective not being able to hit an elk and kill it over a long distance made owning a .223 a poor choice . Some/ most in the group own a variey of .30 - 06 's . This is the one nice large caliber with excellent knock down power at 1000 yards . Do you want to own a rifle that puts you 200 yards from the bear or do you want to be able to knock down the bear at 900 yards ??? do the yards into feet . get it ? good ! For those that think a .308 or . 30 - 06 is to much power at close range , therefore not a good weapon choice , OR TO HEAVY TO CARRY ??? wahhhhh wahhhhh - ask your WW II grandfather or Korean War Grandfather before he dies . They are dying by the 1000's everyday now . Not much time left to hear the truth . I know a good man named Art . He is maybe 5'5" and weighs about 120 pounds . He was 19 and humped korea the whole time with a BAR with extra ammo . None of you knows how heavy that is but Art did it everyday plus field pack in the snow , rain and 100 * hot sun . How close do you want to be to the bear ?????? oh or mountain lion : )

Re: WHAT RIFLE SHOULD I HAVE ?????
Tue, May 12, 2009 - 4:05 PMI went to the 30-06 for many reasons. I wanted the 308 M1A in the scout Squad version Mossy oak colored. I could not afford 1750.00
Best built 308 in my opinion.
For my wife and I we went with the Remmington 7400s. I bought two of them. They are semi automatic in 30-06 and will shoot up to 180 grain bullets with no problems but do not shoot reloads well. Case sizing is critical with this rifle so we got a single shot New England arms for the reloads. I bought 22 thats right 22 Eagle 10 round clips for the Remmingtons. That way each of us can carry 10 rounds in the rifle and 100 in the ammo pouches. My wife has been shooting an 06 since she was teen. Her daddy taught her well. Her old 740 Remmington is pretty worn out and has killed a lot of Michigan White tails. W e put nice scopes on both rifles and are very acurate out to 300 yards.
The main reason we chose the 30-06 is power, stopping power. And the fact that ammo is everywhere. My local Meijers has over a 1000 rounds in stock right now. If they get past the rifle we have several Shotguns and hand guns and my Ruger 10/22 which I have 4 -30 round clips for.
Lots of people dont think to get other things that they need. I just bought two ammo belt wityh suspenders for carrying the 5 ammo pouches each. I like those viet Nam era pouches that were made for the m16 magazines. I can get two of the Eagle 10 rounders in one pouch. 5 pouches per belt. The suspenders put all that ammo weight on your shoulders. That makes a big difference.

Re: WHAT RIFLE SHOULD I HAVE ?????
Tue, May 12, 2009 - 7:57 PMyeah I'm going to have to disagree, or at least hold some strong skepticism on the 30-06 vs. body armor statement. It is ballistically almost identical to the 7.62x54R, which is stopped by class IV body armor including dragon skin and is one of the main 'sniper' threats we face out in the sandbox. We also face against 7.92x56 Mauser sniper fire, which is ballistically superior to the 30-06, and I don't know how our armor deals with that. But I would imagine armor made to handle common rifle threats would be able to handle well, common rifle threats!
But yes. '06 will probably get through more armor types and cover material than the .308
I would say given the above choices, I'd go with 30-06... it's a common caliber both civillian AND military, whereas the civillian demand for the .308 is not as large. Every hunter in my area has a 30-06 'something' in the back of the truck. only the real 'gun guys' get .308's around here, they're nowhere near as common. Now that all the military brass has been ordered destroyed, and with the current ammo shortage I really think you're logistically better off with the '06.

Sun, June 14, 2009 - 8:26 AMDepending on what you are going to do narrows down the range you look for in a rifle. I have several from a henry .22 survival rifle ( actually I own 2) up to the barrett semi auto .50 my favorite one however is my stag arms m4 it's chambered in .223 and I bought the bolt conversion kit in .22 ( fun to shoot and cheaper too) For a good all around rifle I bought a raptor 30.06 with a scope. check out link to some photos on another post ( if anybody is interested) Yes free there are some " military/police rounds that will penetrate standarg body armor like the black talon round but it isn't available on the open market to my knowledge -

Wed, July 15, 2009 - 9:53 PMYou know it is nice to have a 1000 yard rifle, but do the conditions in your area permit such a glory shot? I would buy a rifle to suit my terrain. If I am in the woods, then go with a short range, powerhouse like the 45-70 with iron sights. 308 is good, the crack carries farther than the nearly subsonic 45-70.

Re: WHAT RIFLE SHOULD I HAVE ?????
Thu, July 16, 2009 - 10:11 AMI have to laugh when I see people say any bullet is a pussy bullet. How about I shoot you with .22 rimfire and we will see if you die? Even the little .22 in Stinger hollow point takes down deer with one neck shot. Ive done it. Mitch, .223 can gut you from a hit in shoulder. These little bullets tumble after they hit bone and explode. There is nothing pussy about any bullet. They all kill and they all maim. The .22 is recognized as the greatest all around rifle( in survival situation) by special forces and Navy seals. Google Survival rifles and check out the Military survival rifles in .22 caliber.
Back to what these guys were talking about, Armor penetration. I found some Sellier & Bellot full metal jacketed 180 grain 30-06 rounds for 15.99 per 20 on line. This about the best I have found for body armor. I am still looking for something better like steel core or copper core. Nothing so far legal anyways. There are guys who will make lathe turned steel sabots that are poured inside of a lead bullet but that stuff is way expensive and I am not sure if they are even legal. I will probably go with the copper FMJ from Sellier&Bellot . Free

Re: WHAT RIFLE SHOULD I HAVE ?????
Fri, August 21, 2009 - 8:17 PM308 is a wise choice for a group dynamic because you can chamber it in such a diverse group of weapons. Two of you could have FN-FALs. One of you with the Model 70 or 700, and a couple more with G3 SBRs. Your team would have it all. You really cannot do that with 223 or 7.62x39. They simply do not give the range or terminal ballistics past 600 yards.
Another upside to 308 is the huge array of choices in ammo, barrels, and accessories. There are a trillion reloading tables for the 308 so you can use just about any bullet/powder combination you choose. With the AR you must use extruded powders, the AK needs ball powder, but the 308 does not give a shit as long as it is enough to cycle the gas system.
So maybe Crazy Joe is not as crazy as he thinks. -

Re: WHAT RIFLE SHOULD I HAVE ?????
Sun, August 30, 2009 - 3:14 PMI agree that 30.06 or .308 are good choices. However, if everything goes to hell in a hand basket .223 will be plentiful. The local national guard unit will have all that you need. In other words if you absolutely have to have ammo you can always take it. This requires a weapon that fires .223. Depending on the size of your group a weapons mix is best (i.e. short range, med range and long range weapons). However, using what the locals use has its advantages. This is one reason why our special forces guys used AKs in Vietnam, you could always take ammo from the enemy. -

Re: WHAT RIFLE SHOULD I HAVE ?????
Mon, August 31, 2009 - 12:52 PMRight now, I am observing that everyone and their mama has a .223 rifle. its very popular and it might take people more than one shot to take others down. Re: WHAT RIFLE SHOULD I HAVE ?????
Tue, September 1, 2009 - 3:30 PMI think the SAAMI pressures are a little higher for 5.56, and the shoulder is a little higher and sharper. .223 can chamber in a 5.45, it even seats just fine, and upon firing it balloons out to the barely different chamber shape.
I think you *sometimes* can go the other way around in a well broken-in gun, but you're apt to have feeding problems. I can't remember if the SAAMI difference is enough to be a safety concern, I don't think it was more than a couple thousand psi though.
I would imagine that most modern guns for .223 are actually chambered for 5.45, knowing full well that every .223 will at some point be made to digest or attempt to digest the 5.45 anyhow.

Re: WHAT RIFLE SHOULD I HAVE ?????
Sat, September 12, 2009 - 10:30 AMI tend to agree with you "Crazy Joe" but possibly for other or additional reasons. I have a number of rifles; quite a number infact. Garands, a Norinco (M14/M1A), AR15s (DPMS, Bushmaster, CMMG) in both M4 and rifle versions as well as assorted Mausers, Enfields, Springfield. So I have all the subject calibers covered (.223, .308, .30-06) as well as .303, 8mm Mauser, 6.5 Swede, 7mm Rem Mag, etc. Something can be said for all of them, but since I can't carry all at any one time.....I would narrow what I would throw in the car in a hurry to an AR15 M4 Carbine with EOTECH and/or a Century Arms CETME Sporter. Problelm with the AR15 is you have to carry a cleaning kit with you. It can and therefore it does get dirtied up and jams. I use .62 gr NATO ammo and don't really have any complaints about it (I don;t elk hunt with it). The Spanish CETME is what H&K built under license, calling it the G3 when it was used by the German Army until NATO switched from .308 (7.62 NATO) to .223 (5.56 NATO). The CETME in .308 packs all the punch I've ever needed but (with ammo) is heavy (at my age anyway). The Ruger Mini-14 in .223 is reliable but has some accuracy problems. Bottom Line: .308 CETME and/or AR15 M4 w/cleaning equipment. I'd even "consider" a Ruger Mine-30 in 7.62X39. But since there are plus and minuses to any choice, hope I have the option as to what the situation is ahead of time. -

Sun, September 13, 2009 - 1:28 PMDuring WWII, the US sent troops to counter the Japanese invasion of Alaska. These troops were supported by the Alaskan "Eskimo Scouts" (Alaska National Guard) both as scouts and survival advisors. Guess what they were equipped with by the US government to provide fresh meat? Not a rifle at all but a .22 cal. pistol....Browning Buckmark I believe it was? Saw this on the History Channel recently and thought it was interesting. Not to say they didn't have bigger weapons too. They did have bigger (human) game to deal with after all.

Re: WHAT RIFLE SHOULD I HAVE ?????
Sun, September 13, 2009 - 2:35 PMThere is a tactical advantage to have everyone in a group to have the same calibre weapons. However there is also a greater tactical advantage(versatility) least a couple in the group to be carrying something else, 1 a true long range meat/man dropper like a .300 Win mag or greater and the other a mid to close quarter weapon like a shotgun. This being for the "in case" you have to defend yourself against human attackers.
As for some of the other comments on the post. The 5.56 NATO round was developed for a strategic purposes, its light ammo allowing a soldier to carry more, it is an inheritly highly accurate round meaning a higher lightlihood of a hits per round fired, most importantly for the reason it was picked, the 62 grain bullet is more likely to wound than to kill. The reason this was a criterium was that the bean counters determined that when to you kill an enemy you take only that one out of the fight; but if you wound one 2 more leave the fight to take the wounded one behind the line to a corpsman. Well the flaw in that plan is they based that on how we handle that situation not our enemies.
They shoot or ignore the wounded and keep fighting.Thank you Kennedy administration and all your Ivy League bean counters for saddling our service men with flawed concepts and inadequate weapons.(IMLTHO)
As far as a family arsenal my opinion is 12 gauge shotgun, .22 rifle and pistol, a handgun of higher calibre (my choice is either .357 Sig or .45ACP) and a long range rifle in .30 or higher calibre. A .223/5.56 NATO is only adequate as a small game or varmint round. So if you like squirrel, groundhog, gopher, prairie dog, racoon, oppssum and coyote for supper you're set.
Referring to some of the posts about .22 rifles,, there are more after market mod kits for Ruger 10/22s than any other rifle on the market, more extended magazine choices too.
Also if you can only afford one rifle a 10/22 is a good choice and like the Liberator pistol of WWII can get you more weapons iwith it's judicious use.
I agree with the statements about the versatility of a shotgun, if you have smaller folks in your family a 20 gauge is pretty good across the spectrum of game.
The .308 /7.62 NATO is the baseline .30 calibre round. If you're not too sensitive to recoil I would recommend .300 or .338 Win Mag. for big game like caribou up. I shot a .338 Lepua in The Corps so I actually find these pleasant to shoot.
Anyway meet a bunch of gun enthusiasts shoot what they have, find out what you like best, because what you like best you'll shoot best.

Re: WHAT RIFLE SHOULD I HAVE ?????
Mon, September 14, 2009 - 2:15 PMI dunno, NATO probably wouldn't have converted to .223 if it hadn't killed a few people over the years. You make it sound like an airsoft gun.
I really think the .22LR is the best gun for a one-man team with the logistic limitations of one man, as per Rick's situation. I can't think of any other caliber that would allow him to carry 2,000 rounds in a backpack along with the rest of his gear. Sure, he's no match for armored and armed troops, but I bet even a large roaming gang wouldn't want to mess with someone who can keep up a sustained fire in ANY calibre all day long. I'm pretty sure .22LR have killed more people in civilian gunfights than any other caliber in history. That's something to consider. -

Re: WHAT RIFLE SHOULD I HAVE ?????
Mon, September 14, 2009 - 4:01 PM1K I cited historic facts about the adoption of the 5.56 by America and NATO. The accuracy of the M-16, AR15, M-4 and the round are why a trained soldier can indeed kill with them. I feel the round is woefully inadequate for big game hunting. People are fairly soft targets; but even some people shot in vital areas with the 62 grain 5.56mm bullet have survived(with prompt medical treatment)
I'm not in disagreement with you about the .22 LR round. However the reason it is responsible for so many deaths of people is largely due to its ubiquitous nature. Professionals choose it because it is relatively quiet and has an "inside the eggshell egg scrambler" effect when shot into the skull. Others use it because it is there. In countries where firearms are not readily available kitchen knives, hammers and other tools up way up the list for the same reason. -

I can't believe that Curtiss is still being allowed to comment on anything other than food preparation and consumption.
"Why are you calling me all these derogatory names?"
People call you derogatory names, Curtiss, because you're full of shit.
"I cited historic facts about the adoption of the 5.56 by America and NATO."
You cited motherfucking-jack-shit, that's what you cited. You ought to be slapped in the back of the ear and demoted back to the fucking short bus for not even knowing the goddamned difference between myth and fact.
"The accuracy of the M-16, AR15, M-4 and the round are why a trained soldier can indeed kill with them."
Blood loss and soft-tissue trauma are why anybody who can learn to shoot can kill with them. What's this "trained soldier" bullshit? Put the sights on target and squeeze the trigger. Bang, motherfucker. Tango down. It's not fucking rocket science.
"I feel the round is woefully inadequate for big game hunting."
You say that like it's supposed to be some huge, fucking revelation. Big fucking deal.
"but even some people shot in vital areas with the 62 grain 5.56mm bullet have survived(with prompt medical treatment)"
Yeah? I've got news for you: the rest of the people who were shot with it in their vitals fucking died, and they constitute the overwhelming majority.
"Professionals choose it because it is relatively quiet"
Professional whom? Compared to what? A sonic crack is a sonic crack. Unless you reduce the velocity and muffle the report, a gunshot is going to be heard.
"and has an "inside the eggshell egg scrambler" effect when shot into the skull."
This is absolutely fucking bullshit. You've never done it. You've never seen it done. You've never met someone who has done it. You've never seen one, single bit of forensic evidence that might, possibly suggest that such a thing is even remotely within the realm of possibility, not in all your years of overeating, underexercising, and masturbating to "Hit Man". Do you know why, you fucking liar? Because it has never, fucking happened.
"In countries where firearms are not readily available kitchen knives, hammers and other tools up way up the list for the same reason."
Oh, no shit? Did you have another epiphany?
"1 a true long range meat/man dropper like a .300 Win mag"
The service life of a .300 Win. Mag. barrel is a thousand rounds, give or take a barrel. That cartridge just, flat out, eats bores. Once the barrel reaches the end of its service life, expect permanent accuracy degradation of 1 M.O.A. for every fifty to 60 additional rounds downrange. Expect to spend a lot of time bent over a lathe, or at your second job just to keep yourself in barrels and practice ammunition. Learning to shoot up to the .300 Win. Mag.'s potential isn't fucking cheap, and neither is maintaining that ability.
"a mid to close quarter weapon like a shotgun. This being for the "in case" you have to defend yourself against human attackers."
Yeah, which is exactly why every military in the world issues shotguns service-wide, instead of carbines, sub-guns, and semi-automatic pistols.
"The 5.56 NATO round was developed for a strategic purposes,"
You don't know the goddamned difference between "strategic" and "logistic".
"it is an inheritly highly accurate round "
There is nothing inherent about the 5.56mm NATO's accuracy. Chamber it in a shitty rifle, or a decent rifle with a shitty barrel, and its accuracy will be shitty.
"meaning a higher lightlihood of a hits per round fired"
This is a training issue, not an ammunition issue.
"most importantly for the reason it was picked, the 62 grain bullet is more likely to wound than to kill."
This is fucktarded shit that got my knickers in such a twist that I just had to come back in here and condescend to address your fucktardedness...or would that be "fucktardacity"? Anyway, it's fucktarded. The M193 cartridge has a 55-grain bullet, stupid, and it was not designed to wound. That's just fucktarded. I can hardly believe that you can say that shit with a straight face. You must be even more stupid that I thought. Do you have a court-appointed guardian?
"The reason this was a criterium was"
"Criterium" isn't even a word, fucktard. Crack open a motherfucking dictionary, or stop using big words altogether.
"that the bean counters determined that when to you kill an enemy you take only that one out of the fight; but if you wound one 2 more leave the fight to take the wounded one behind the line to a corpsman. Well the flaw in that plan is they based that on how we handle that situation not our enemies."
Really? Are you sure? That's why the U.S. went to a lighter rifle and an intermediate cartridge, because the Krauts and the Japs kill or ignore their own wounded? Really? Because they're the last enemies the U.S. fought before the Army decided that a .22-calibre cartridge was the way to go. The ORO research ran from '48 to '50. The die was cast long before Jack Kennedy was in any position to influence development or procurement, so I don't know why you want to blame him for anything. Oh, wait...because you're stupid, that's why--and, from what I'm reading on this thread, probably a sodomite. That's the rumour, anyway... Even when he was C.I.C., Kennedy had nothing to do with the 5.56mm NATO or the M16 series.
"They shoot or ignore the wounded and keep fighting."
Right... Sure...
"Thank you Kennedy administration and all your Ivy League bean counters"
I'm guessing that, in your head, time isn't linear. The Big Army went to Armalite for a lightweight, .22 calibre something-or-other way back in 1957. Stoner, who was with Armalite at that time, scaled his AR-10 around the .223 Remington, and the Army got the AR-15 in '58 for testing. While the M16 series was fielded from '62 onward, it wasn't adopted until '64 by the Air Force. The Army didn't adopt it until '67. Kennedy was C.I.C. from '61 to '63, and decisions about things like infantry rifles aren't made at that level to begin with, so you're just being a disrespectful asshole.
"for saddling our service men with flawed concepts and inadequate weapons."
Said the fucktard who has never launched a single, military-issued bullet, from a single, military-issued weapon, into a single, military-designated enemy, because he was too fucking fat to be operationally deployed.
"(IMLTHO)"
Your opinion is irrelevant because you don't know shit from shinola, dumbass. Does this kind of stupid shit come out of your mouth at work? Fuck. You don't need a LTHO. What you fucking need is some humility, a whole lot of introspection, and fucking Jenny Craig and a Lap-Band.
"As far as a family arsenal"
What the fuck do you know about "family" anything? You probably ate your family.
"A .223/5.56 NATO is only adequate as a small game or varmint round."
Always thinking about food... Sheesh. The relatively recent development of MK 262 Mod 0 and MK 262 Mod 1 has significantly improved the terminal effectiveness of the 5.56mm NATO. Out of a 1:7, 18-in., match barrel with a good can and glass, and off of a rest, the M262 Mod 1 is monotonously consistent to 600 yards. In the hands of a good shooter, it is terminal on CoM hits out to 800 yards.
"So if you like squirrel, groundhog, gopher, prairie dog, racoon, oppssum and coyote for supper you're set."
I've got some recipes for all of those if you're interested.
"Also if you can only afford one rifle a 10/22 is a good choice and like the Liberator pistol of WWII can get you more weapons iwith it's judicious use."
I'd love to see you try to sneak up on somebody with a tiny, little Liberator clutched in your fat hand.
"I shot a .338 Lepua in The Corps so I actually find these pleasant to shoot."
I'm still not convinced that you were ever in the Corps. What years were you in? Didn't I ask you for your 214, once? You probably ate that too.
"Anyway meet a bunch of gun enthusiasts shoot what they have, find out what you like best, because what you like best you'll shoot best."
It's the other way around, dickhead. "Like" has nothing to do with it.
Fucktard.

Wed, September 23, 2009 - 12:11 PMBlah, blah, blah... It was sure worth your time to bullshit through several paragraphs in this thread alone, though, wasn't it?
What years were you in the Corps? I know you're still lurking here. -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: WHAT RIFLE SHOULD I HAVE ?????
Fri, September 25, 2009 - 1:17 PMAs much as I love to see a good flame war play out and protract, it's too obvious who won here.
Anytime someone says 'you aren't worth my time'... what they're really saying is 'I know you'll hand my ass back to me if I try, so I'm going to cover my genitals with both hands and retreat cautiously even though I'm still not willing to admit that I whimped out' -

Re: WHAT RIFLE SHOULD I HAVE ?????
Fri, September 25, 2009 - 1:47 PMHonestly, Thousand, a war was not my intent. It's not any fun with Curtiss, because it's just so easy, and we all know how those things have turned out in the past: exactly the way this one turned out. I just could not believe that even Curtiss could post such bullshit. Actually...
I still want to know Curtiss's enlistment and discharge dates. I know you're out there, Curtiss, reading this, pudgy cheeks turning red with anger.

Re: WHAT RIFLE SHOULD I HAVE ?????
Mon, September 14, 2009 - 11:50 AMYes the .338 Lepua is indeed somewhat rare.; but I was just saying that because I was used to the recoil of that immensely powerful round the Wnchester Magnums were not uncomfortable for me to shoot. They should be available as they are popular hunting calibres. -

Re: WHAT RIFLE SHOULD I HAVE ?????
Mon, September 21, 2009 - 10:10 PMI would have to agree with Thousand. If I had to bug out of my home and into the wasteland I would carry my ruger 10-22 I would carry 5 bricks of shell in my pack (2500 rounds) and the SIG Mosquito .22 automatic hand gun. I have a pair of Short swords as well. Sean will remember them from when I was pretending to be free at last. Michael -

Re: WHAT RIFLE SHOULD I HAVE ?????
Wed, September 23, 2009 - 8:20 AMNot Highlander just a creepy sneak ha ha ha ha . When I bailed out I circled back and lurked. Like I said before I was having intrusion attempts so I bailed out and returned with better spyware. No big deal. I was posting lots of N.W.O. shit and someone took notice. As for rifle choices I want one of everything ha ha ha . Cant have them all though so I have what I can afford. I am getting a new Bushmaster AR-15 chrome lined barrel . Very nive short version. I think its a M-4 size rifgle but not sure. They are a little pricey but I can get one here for about 900.00 . The ammo is not in good supply though. I will have to order some and wait like evryone else. For now my 30-06 Remmingtons will have to hold the fort. I have a new shotgun (870 Rem) and my 10-22 ruger. I got 5000 rounds for the .22 and 300 for 30-06. I need MORE!~!!!!!. Michael -

Re: WHAT RIFLE SHOULD I HAVE ?????
Wed, September 23, 2009 - 8:43 AMIn response to Mick and Curtis, I disagree with both of you on the .223 round for big game hunting. Even the .22 rimfire will kill deer and easily. The target for a deer with a small round is the spine below and behind the ears. Unlike most of you here I have poached deer at night. This was years ago when I was a fucktard ha ha ha . One shot from a 10-22 with a CCI stinger hollow point and bambi drops like a stone. The shot placement is all that matters. Miss the spine? and bambi is wounded . There fore you must be a good shot with small caliber rounds to take down deer. The .223 will drop an elk the same way. Base of the spine below the head and ears. I have seen this done. WOuld I recomend this? hell no. Use the proper round if you can but if you have to carry one gun you better think about how much ammo you can carry. I would rather have 2000 .22 rimfire in my pack with a good 10-22 then 300 rounds of 308, 30 30, 30-06 or even 400 rounds of .223 . For me and I am a real good shot the .22 rimfire which by the way is the special ops choice of survival rifle( stoner AR-7) SEARCH AND RESCUE> will get the job done. Anyone who disrespects any rifle round is a fool. From the .22 rimfire and even the .22 subsonic and short to a .50 caliber Barret will kill you just as dead. The real question is this? How well can you shoot? do you practice? why not? Cant afford it? Then you should have a .22 so you can learn to put 10 rounds in a 9 inch circle at 100 yards because if you cant? it wont matter what the fuck you are shooting you will be dead. a .22 RIMFIRE IS THE BEST ALL AROUND SURVIVAL GUN PERIOD. It is not the best battle rifle, it is not the best big game hunter and it is not good outside of 100 yards. But those things do not matter in survival. What matters is having enough ammo in your pack to survive for as long as it takes. 2000 rounds is 2000 meals of meat. Its a simple numbers game guys. If you dont like the .22 the .223 IS THE NEXT ROUND UP. either will do the job.
Now if I were stranded in Alaska ON THE kenai river surrounded by 1300 pound bears ??? I think a bigger cartridge is in order dont you? 338, 460, 300 mag all come to mind but Im not up there. There are no huge people eating bears in Lower Michigan. .22 rimfire is my go to gun for the long haul. Cheap ammo and easy to carry . Michael

Re: WHAT RIFLE SHOULD I HAVE ?????
Thu, November 5, 2009 - 11:23 AMI'm sorry man but I disagree with you. I'm a married man and a .308 would put her on her butt. However a sks seems to work pretty good.
One thing to consider is the fact that we all arn't soldiers. I have a girl in my group who is five, five and weighs 100 pounds soaking wet. We have several different guns. Our marksman uses an AK-47 and a .308 It all depends on what your doing, who is with you, whats available, ect. -
-
Re: WHAT RIFLE SHOULD I HAVE ?????
Thu, November 5, 2009 - 4:28 PManyone who uses an AK47 is NOT a marksman. AK's are lucky to get a 4-6 inch group at 100 yards. Reliable, yes. Firepower, yes.
Accurate? Come on. It's made of stamped sheet metal and cardboard. Don't be dumb. -
-
Re: WHAT RIFLE SHOULD I HAVE ?????
Thu, November 5, 2009 - 8:07 PMYou don't get what I'm saying. that's what the .308 is for. but he's not about to run around with only a bolt action rifle. If long range is needed, we got it. But most of the time an ak-47 will do the job. -
-
Re: WHAT RIFLE SHOULD I HAVE ?????
Yesterday, 3:50 PMMost of the time an AK-47 will do the job. True until you you run out of ammo. I have 10,000 rounds of .22 rim fire. Really I do. I have 30-06, 20 ga.shotguns, 32 win special and 9mm parabelums but I have 10 thousand 22 rounds. How many Ak 47 rounds do you have? how many can you carry on your person? You cant even carry 1/4 as many as I can carry in .22 stingers. Both are deadly weapons at 100 yards. Both are not very good past that but both will kill at 200 yards. A scoped Ruger 10/22 is more acurate then any AK-47 . Why would anyone disagree with those facts? Top Military survival teams all use the AR-7 .22 rimfire. Why?? Because they can carry huge amounts of ammunition in small pouches. Its that simple. Michael -

Re: WHAT RIFLE SHOULD I HAVE ?????
Yesterday, 4:58 PM32 win special? That's kind of a funny caliber to stock up on. I have to ask why
I have enough .25acp's to keep my 2 mags full for my cute little ppk knockoff, and enough odd rounds to pop off a few for comfort to make sure it's still reliable and smooth-feeding. I don't stock up on it because in a warzone scenario I'll go for other guns first. In peacetime I only need it when I'm making a quick trip to the gas station and I don't want to put on a holster for a 'real' gun lol. I may go through a box of ammo every two years with it. -
-
Re: WHAT RIFLE SHOULD I HAVE ?????
Yesterday, 5:01 PMOKAY OKAY LOL
I'll do my wikipedia-ing FIRST next time. I did NOT know there was a rifle cartridge in .32, I only know of the .32 ACP and figured yours was a pistol cartridge of even more obscurity. I retract, repeal, recall, rescind, and remove my previous statement. -

Re: WHAT RIFLE SHOULD I HAVE ?????
Today, 12:56 PMIts a model 94 Winchester 32 special. Its like a fat 30-30 . Nice brush gun for deer hunting. I only stock 80 rounds for that one. Shells are over 22 bucks a box. Im still saving for my AR-15 but for now the 30-06 rifles we have are more then enough to keep us safe and fed. Not to mention I have a lifetime supply of .22 lr. Michael

Re: WHAT RIFLE SHOULD I HAVE ?????
Today, 6:31 AMIt's not military, It's just a group of friends coming together for survival. Only carry a few clips for the ak on me, But we have extra on the argo. -

Re: WHAT RIFLE SHOULD I HAVE ?????
Today, 1:12 PMCartridge size and weight has been the determining factor most of time in military choices for infantry and special forces. The 308 being shorter allowed a weapon with equal power to the 30-06 to replace that longer round as the military choice for medium machine gun. M-60 ,M1A etc. You can carry more 308 then 30-06. The foot soldier was given the 5.56 because they can carry twice the number of 308 rounds on their person. The 5.56 matches the .308 in most accuracy and range tests so its a no brainer as to why the U.S. Military went to that round. now they have the 6.8 which is in between the 5.56 and the 308. The Ak 47 round being .308 but with considerably less powder in my book is the best spray and pray weapon for inside of 100 yards. A man can carry a lot of 7.62 by 39 but can carry more .223 or 5.56.
A .223 can blow the back of anyone's head off. That means it will kill every bit as good as an Ak round. What you carry in battle is not governed by the same rules as what you would carry as a survivalist. Unless I WAS in a war zone and needed the range of the .223 or the .308 I would not carry either one. Patrolling my land and hunting critters and warding off gang bangers armed with shotguns and hand guns the .22 will be all I need. I can carry 400 rounds on me in magazines with zero discomfort. This gives me the ability to keep fire on a target while we bring up the bigger calibers being the 30-06 rifles. Using the big guns to lay down grazing fire is a waste of precious ammo. Pin your enemy down with the .22 and kill him with the scoped 30-06 when he sticks his head out. W e are set up to fight any way we have to . long , medium and short range. My 870 pump shotguns are bad to bone inside of 40 yards. Then we have pistols and big knives. But for the brunt the .22 lr is what I will use most of the time as deterant and hunting rifle. Michael
