What are some medicines, vaccines, etc. that are difficult or impossible to stock up on due to prescription laws and red tape, but could be had as veterinary or farm supplies and used on people if needed? I'm thinking tetanus shots, penicillin, that kind of stuff. What is useful, what is NOT and can kill a human, and how do you cut the dosage from say, a horse, to a human level?

Mon, January 28, 2008 - 5:37 PMEurethamiacin is the synthetic substitute for Penicillin. It works just as well, and has a longer shelf life. You can get a big 'ol hunk of that from a horse doctor, store it.
Also, worm medicines are not really a bad idea to have in an EOW locker. Worms, ticks n fleas will be human afflictions in an EOW situation. -

Re: Vet medicine for people
Mon, January 28, 2008 - 9:01 PMis eurithamiacin alright for people who are allergic to penicillin? if it's a completely different drug then it's probably okay. Your considerate somplification of 'synthetic substitute for penicillin' left me a little confused though. Sorry. I've a family member allergic to penicillin but not other antibiotics. -

Re: Vet medicine for people
Wed, January 30, 2008 - 5:03 PMAs far as I've had it explained, it is good for treating everything Penicillin is, but made from synthetic compounds. Penicillin is at its heart organic (mold) and some folks are allergic to it. -

Re: Vet medicine for people
Sat, February 2, 2008 - 2:28 PMI thought neosporin was horse medicine till I was 23 year's old. Steve, on the yahoo survivalist group say's any medicine that can be used on a pig are alright with people. I don't know. I don't know if I would give myself a west nile shot meant for horses. Ivermectin can kill heart worm's in some dog's. If it don't kill your dog. I don't think I'll eat any of that either. Nurse Goodbody (malicious) probably know's what might be harmful crossing over to people from animal's. Far as I know, horse antibiotic's are good for people too. -

Re: Vet medicine for people
Mon, February 4, 2008 - 6:45 PMWe get our antivenoms and vaccines from horses, so we should be readily compatible.

Re: Vet medicine for people
Mon, February 4, 2008 - 7:59 PMyea, we're readily compatible...except for Bruce Lee.
Is there a way to check for allergies before it comes to the 'all or nothing' method?
