Is it? Can a person be so far off the grid to be under the radar? When you still have to have a place to live, and you stil have to work, can you become invisible? Can you just disappear? How?

Re: Is it possible to become invisible?
Thu, October 1, 2009 - 9:23 PMTo a far degree. Helps to have a face man to run FRNs through. Also helps to understand that you really do need to become self reliant. No, really. That includes not making stupid choices like having a couple of stiff drinks just *before* you chop wood for the week instead of after....that sort of thing.
As long as you wear the face your momma gave you in this surveillance cam society though, you'll never be truly "invisible". I doubt you could break laws and remain on the streets long term. But if you are referring to opting out...yes, it can be done. It's a different lifestyle, but it can be done.

Re: Is it possible to become invisible?
Thu, October 1, 2009 - 10:16 PMYou can drop out, burn your ID and remove your fingertips. Probably best to head into the wilderness at that point. Or you can get fake ID and live as another person. Oh, there are probably gulcher communities out there that live invisibly, but how you contact them I don't know. Start your own perhaps. -

Re: Is it possible to become invisible?
Thu, October 1, 2009 - 11:21 PMYes you can. Technology is like a double edged blade, you need to understand and know the limits of it's capabilities to beat it. I could spill more information but I'd get in the shit, seriously.
Easiest way would be to become, a squatter(living in vacant land or house, without telling the owners) hermit, in a country area, would be pretty lonely though. If your working and not paying tax , pay would be pittance, unless you have a valued skill, and take cash in hand, generally at a lower rate. Some organic orchards and farms offer free food and accommodation for work, though they may have to put you on the books for insurance purposes.
Hardest way would be, walk about in the bush and never come back, if you don't know what your doing, the tummy will grumble, and throat would be dry, very fast.

Re: Is it possible to become invisible?
Fri, October 2, 2009 - 10:09 AMAll interesting replies. Thanks!
Definately not looking to do anything illegal. That's not me. I'm just sick and tired of the rat race. Everyone wants to know every single thing about you including what color underwear you wear on alternate Thursdays. I'm tired of all the questions that have nothing to do with anything. Geeze, I'm just looking for a place to park my 5th wheel and a job, not for national top secret clearance. All the crap is wearing on me and I would just like to drop out and vanish into the ethers as. I don't bother anyone and I don't want to be bothered anymore. Maybe headding for the hills isn't a bad idea at all. I'd have to get a way smaller trailer though.

Yep, that's us already. I think I could very easily be the 'scary old woman that lives way up in the woods and never comes to town'. You know, the one that all the kids are scared of and everyone else has silly roumors about. Yep, that could very easily be me in the future. Right now, I'm thinking the sooner the better. -

Re: Is it possible to become invisible?
Fri, October 2, 2009 - 9:40 PMMoving to a small country town is a good way to escape the rat race, does cost a bit of money to set yourself up though, pending if you want to buy land or rent. Rent is fairly cheap out in the country, if you could score a house or farm sitter job, that would be the cheapest, you just have to look after the place and accommodation is free, you could even grow your own food if it was a farm. If you have good references that's a pretty good start. Best of all it's legal.

Re: Is it possible to become invisible?
Fri, October 2, 2009 - 10:28 PMHi Zarina, I remember you from when I was here before. You know we bugged out in 2008. We left the city and bought a house in the country. We were fortunate to be able to sell our house in the city before the housing crash happened. W e did lose money but were able to buy a much bigger spread for 1/2 what it was worth. Land right now is at an all time low. If ever there was a time to buy its right now. Anyone else listening? buy land now before it goes back up. W e locked in our property taxes low and can now afford to build the fortress. land from 1/2 an acre to 40 acres are selling for half to 1/3 of what they were getting 10 years ago. The downside is lack of Jobs and the rich are gobbling up all of the repos and sitting on them waiting to make a profit. Its the greatest oppertunity you will ever find to buy land and the worst time in recent history to find a job. That really sucks. I am invisible here when Im home. No one knows Im here except my neighbors. Michael

Re: Is it possible to become invisible?
Sat, October 3, 2009 - 7:14 AMi second what michael said, you know you can buy 40 acres in west texas for like 5 grand and own it outright with only 150 dollars owed in property tax a year right? im savin my money to buy some land right now but this decline will be huge so if now is a good time to buy 6 months to a year will be better as far as prices go, look up "land acre" on ebay, people are getting desperate to sell unwanted or unused property for an income suppliment. the 10 year depression starts now, believe it! -

Re: Is it possible to become invisible?
Fri, October 9, 2009 - 6:03 PMI've got a cousin who'se off in mexico right now, I guess he killed a couple people and mexico will not extradite if the death penalty is a possibility.
Short of leaving the country, yes you can disappear. The easiest way is to create a new identity but even that is difficult. A homeless person can, say, go to a social security office and tell them he/she is trying to get back on their feet. They have no documentation, nothing. They say they've been on the road for a long, long time. They may not even remember who their parents are, or nearest kin. They say they are ready to start getting back on their feet and back into society. They say their name is jane doe, the office has no evidence to the contrary, the office HAS to issue a card and a new social security number to jane doe. Jane doe takes this to the DMV and gets a state I.D. card. Jane doe takes these two and opens a bank account. Jane doe takes all those and buys a car and a house, starts a credit reccord, and a completely new life.
but Jane doe MUST become jane doe, regardless of who she was beforehand. she must cut off all ties to the past.
Identity is a funny thing. We think of it as a concrete, but it is actually abstract. It is a perception, a self perception rather than an absolute. you can BECOME jane doe, and if you do, if you really are that person, you are not committing fraud. But if it is just an alias, a secondary identity, you are committing some serious fraud with federal accountability. If Jane Doe was ever found to have a different identity in the past, jane doe can expect serious legal repercussions, but truly owning up to the new identity, depending on circumstances and motive, will often allow for fairly solid legal grounds for defense. It is still of the utmost importance that Jane Doe never compromises her new identity at all. Not even to her new spouse years down the road, or dearest friend confidante.
You can look up all kinds of helpful articles on 'how to disappear' but I would reccommend doing it from a public computer, well in advance of your actions and do not discuss it with anyone. -

Re: Is it possible to become invisible?
Sun, October 11, 2009 - 12:03 AMI think it would be easier to live under an alias than off the grid. More practical too. -

Re: Is it possible to become invisible?
Mon, October 12, 2009 - 8:23 AMmost people have already answered the original question.
YEs you can.
Most contractors I know pay in cash. We have guys come and go all the time who do general contracting roofing, if you can swing a hammer and lift a heavy load you can get paid. Many in our area are paid by the week cash in hand. That way no one knows who ya really are or how much youre really making. -

Re: Is it possible to become invisible?
Mon, October 12, 2009 - 4:36 PMyup. that's what I'm doing. I've got a 9 pound hammer, several dozens of 3 foot spikes, and an assortment of heavy retaining equipment ranging from 45-90 pounds per panel, no real work breaks and 12-14 hour shifts. One positive thing about this job is that all my better-seasoned co-workers are strong as oxes. I just have to eat my wheaties in the morning and I'll put on another 20 pounds of good weight in the next few months here.
Also a great place to gain the masonry experience I'll need to build my retreat in the next year or so here.

Re: Is it possible to become invisible?
Tue, November 3, 2009 - 7:40 AMyep you can....a little personal history here....back in the 90's I dropped out for a couple of yrs....I traveled the country worked at times was homeless mostly......I worked a carnival for a while, rode the rails, I collected food stamps and give away checks from three states at the same time doing that. The all powerful FedGov...it don't really talk to itself all that much....at least not back then...and states talking to each other...well ...not so much....I was getting food stamps and a check and all I had for an address was a hand drawn map of where I "told" them I was camping.....That was then though ....now you'd have to try and see....I would think that you could get away with it rather easily though still ...heck I even had THEM paying for my apartment back in Montana for a yr.....Depends greatly though on where ya at...the NW was a bums heaven...the SE....not so much.....

Re: Is it possible to become invisible?
Thu, November 5, 2009 - 11:13 AMToo easy. I did it for years. Find a job that pays under the table. (I worked at a junk yard.) Get a shelter, Pop up tent, camper, Tent, hell what ever works for you.
Go to some mom and pops camp grounds. set up, Talk to people so you can get a ride to the store. and there you go. -

Re: Is it possible to become invisible?
Thu, November 5, 2009 - 4:26 PMprobably 90% or more of construction jobs of various kinds will pay cash under the table with no paperwork, hell you don't even need to give your boss a real name. Most guys there will go by nicknames anyhow. Just make sure you report your all-cash, unrecorded, non-traceable income at the end of each year so Uncle Sam can get his chunk.
