Can you grow coffee or tea in temperate North America? Where will we coffee-holics get our caffeine?

Well, you're after my own heart, aren't you? :-D

It's on my list; I don't have any coffee trees right now as my space is so limited, but it's a priority once I do have the space. There are sometimes older trees available on eBay which you might want to look into, as they have to be like three or four years old before they start bearing. Also, while we go through a three pound can of ground coffee about weekly here, if a body grows their own it would likely become a special treat as each tree only produces about 3-5 pounds as I recall. More info here www.coffeeresearch.org/coffee...ing.htm

You might also think about switching over to tea since the tea bush in much easier to grow---and it has caffeine, too. I've broken my coffee habit before by increasingly cutting back on my coffee and replacing the volume with black tea. But coffee is so darned available in this culture...I slipped back into the habit.

    Sigh.....

Yeah I have gone cold turkey on caffeine before - BOSS, for example, does not carry coffee in the field (in spite of my spirited arguments that we should teach cowboy coffee as a primitive art lol).

But it is one of my chief pleasures in life. Sometimes I think I was just born lucky. I don't pass judgment on the (non-predatory) vices of others, but lucky for me my drugs of choice are both legal - alcohol and caffeine.

I heard of a substitite made from dandelion root. There's something called "Dandy Blend." Was targeted toward Mormons because coffee etc. was not allowed. Dandelions, ha, next to neem what else is such a handy plant?

There's also Pero, Inka and Roma...all tasty!! And---all NOT COFFEE, LOL! I've Inka in my cupboard right now, having drunk up all the Pero and Roma. I may like the Inka best. As I recall, it's made with beets and figs. I think Roma is mostly barley.

But only coffee is coffee. :-)

There is also a wonderful road side weed that is easy to grow has some rather nice looking flowers and don't take a huge amount of room. It makes a great coffee substitute. Or can be mixed with your coffe to make it last longer....... Any guess???..... CHICKORY! I've used it, is a little bit of a pain to process harvest,clean,dry.roast. ( but so is coffee.

H as anyone tried to grow either tea or coffee ?? In my part of the world it gets below freezing pretty regularly and I am not sure either can survive that .I am working on a green house so that might be an option.I have tried both dandylion and chicory and chickory is by far the best.If you would like to try chickory ,Luzianne ( same folks that make tea) make an instant coffee with chickory added.

Coffee requires conditions that can only be duplicated indoors in temperate climates but if you buy northern varietals of tea plants, such as the Russian teas now widely available on the market, you can grow it pretty easily even in cooler climates.

You need a hot house with a heat source if it freezes over there, I had 3 frosts in the early morning this year only one was bad, So I just brave what we call cold in australia spay salty bore water all over my frost prone plants, just before the frost settles bbbrrr.

Coffee can be grown as a houseplant in a warm room since it appreciates lower light levels. However, to have it as more than a tasty treat once or twice a year, you'd have to have several plants.

What if I just get my caffiene fix from yerba mate? is yerba mate hard to grow? Even if you had a pretty good supply and were able to have coffee available, wouldn't the acids rot your teeth? what if your suply of toothpaste isnt alot but you have coffee?

Is it hard to roast coffee beans? Imagine if you were a survivor in a place where only YOU knew how to grow coffee in abundance and knew how to roast and grind. Thats money in the bank! You would be able to barter with other survival people for whatever you wanted from them. Especially if they had a caffeine addiction.

Suddenly, this has become more interesting to me..........This sounds a bit more morally sound than the "pimping my attractive friends out for food and dry goods" Idea I previously planned out......or...... I could do both!!

Come and find me when TSHTF I can "hook you up" or give you a job.
