I think this would be the ideal tent, and no poles to break either.

very cool. :) my 2 concerns would be slipping through the middle slit while sleeping and the top not blocking enough sun.

How much sun hits you depends on how high above the hammock you string the tarp. If you set it up with the tarp right above the mosi netting and angle the sides downward, then you'll get little to no sun. If you string the tarp so it's a couple feetabove the mosi netting, then you'll get some sun on your head or your feet. If it s a really bright day with no rain, you can put the tarp a couple feet above the hammock so you get more air flow, then move the tarp farther toward your head and it will block out more sun in that area. Of couse, your feet will be exposed. You can always order a bigger off-the-shelf tarp from them. They also do custom work to an extent.

I've done alot of camping stringing a tarp over a hammock. That hennessy hammock look's like it's a good quality deal. You should get one.

Dyno; supposedly the slit only goes about a third of the way up, and your weight holds it shut until you push with your feet. I heard on the site that there's Velcro involved also in the opening slit, but I'm not sure if it's on all models or not.

There is a slit for ingress/egress, and there is some velcro, but I never fell out of mine. It's not like the slit is right under your arse, or anything. The velcro is just for holding the slit closed to keep out mosquitos and what not; it's not a load-bearing component of the hammock at all. I honestly can't see how a person could actually fall out of one. I know it all sounds weird and I was just as skeptical when I first heard about it. I think my first comment was something like, "Well, that's just stupid." Believe it or not, they do work as advertised.

thanks for the extra scoop. I was picturing the slit the whole length and thought that with a few wrong turns in the middle of the night that'd be ass-through-the-whole comedy. ;) I wonder if you could put a space blanket or those mylar-bubble insulation panels on the top to help with the sun. very nifty indeed. in the desert here I think we'd have to bring our own poles or wrestle with a cactus, but I still really like it.

        on my wish list:
        titanium spork
        steel collapsible chopsticks
        sierra/zzzip stove
        badonkadonk

          LOL! a SPORK!

The one utensile that can't do anything! The tines are too short to stab at your food, but the grooves cut too far in for the spoon to hold liquid!

Curst be the man who invented the spork.

            Thousand,
you apparently haven't used the titanium spork. and seriously, the spork is an award-winning design (literally). It's been in several industrial design shows. :) I say curse those inferior sporks!

I called them and they are actually working on one now that will be stronger and bigger to accomodate a plus 250 pound man over 6" tall. Current models are usable for men in the 250 range but they are less than comfortable for them. The sturdier construction and increased room would make them even better survival shelters for you "regular sized" people IMHO. They hide real well in pine trees by the way.

I don't know who you talked to there, but you should call back and ask to speak with a different customer rep. Hennessey already has two different models for the big guys: the Explorer Deluxe (good to 300-lbs. and over 6 feet); and the Safari Deluxe (good to 350-lbs. and over 6 feet). The model I had and lost was the Explorer Deluxe.

If I ever see that dude again, I'm going to break his legs. No shit.

FYI, I have a book entitled "Hammock Camping: The Complete Guide to Greater Comfort, Convenience, and Freedom" by Ed Speer. ISBN 0-9718594-4-2.

        Speer Hammocks, Inc.
        34 Clear Creek Road
        Marion, NC 28752-6407

        e-mail: info@speerhammocks.com
        www.speerhammocks.com

It's all about how to make your own 4-season camping hammock. Speer will make and sell you one, but the book is really good and very thorough. No entry slit in the bottom, but he does introduce you to his own, more impressive innovation in camping-hammock design: a sleeping bag that wraps around the outside of the hammock, like a coccoon. He calls it a pea pod.

He coaches you through making the hammock with detachable mosi netting, tarp, insulating mods, and the pea pod bag, which is much warmer in cold weather than putting a sleeping bag inside of a hammock. I've tested it, and it does work much better that way. The insulation doesn't get all compressed by your bodyweight, which negates the insulating value. You can also wear the pea pod bag as a garment. It's very innovative.

I like the Henessey better for warmer weather (when I still had mine), but the Speer is much better for the colder months, ime. Of course, i haven't tried the Henessey 4-season kit, so I can't make a comparison, yet.

Mick my call was about 6 months ago. I'm glad to see the new models are out already.

That looks like an awesome deal! I've for a long time wanted a hammock for camping, always figured I'd have to make my own. The deserts are obviously not viable for it but the mountains here are full of aspen, which by it's very nature is usually perfectly positioned for stringing a hammock.

If I could get one that could cram me and my wife inside and not have our elbows in each other's eye sockets, I'd snatch one up right away! I'd bet you'd be very hard pressed to find a tent that was as light and packable as one of those hammocks.

I need a small solar-powered fan so that I can convert my solar oven into a food dehydrator. Other than that, I still would love to get my hands on a Bhengasi Boiler, a UV water sterilizing pen, and a new pump-action .22 rifle. Oh, and an ultralite compound bow for someone of my stature.

Anything against lever-actions? The Marlin Model 39a is really sweet, and it's a takedown.

.22's are so small I really prefer a pump to a lever, but that's just me. They lend so well to quick follow-ups or rapid fire, I prefer an in-line action movement like a pump, keeps the point of aim truer on such a small little shooter.

Anyone have problems with 10-22 cycling? I tend to lean towards manually cycled actions for reliability, and I'm gonna get a rimfire soon. But unless I'm mistaken, the 10-22 seems reliable enough to use. Would you stake your life on it? or would you go with a manually cycled .22?

I would not stake my life on any 22, I am a student of the bigger the hole you make the better.
The 10-22 is the most popular selling 22 of all time, 39A is the oldest continuing firearm in production, I have'nt had too much trouble with the action not cycling, usually it is due to ammo and not mechanical. Mine is not a Ruger though, it is from Volquarten Custom, I ordered all the parts and built it myself.

            (Right there, man!)

''What do you mean, behind the rabbit?''

            (No, it IS the rabbit!)

''You silly sod! I soiled my armor over that!''

You can't go wrong with a Ruger 10-22. Fantastic weapon. It is also one of the most customizable guns on the markey. Hell, there's even a kit to make an MG44 out of one. You can get stocks with scout rails and T6 collapsable stocks, and many more extras. Add to that the fact that it it a solid gun that shoots a one hole group with the right ammo.

The only times I've had trouble with a 10.22 not cycling properly are:

          Bad ammo.

Crud in the action or magazine from dropping the gun or mag or both into crud. Problem would have occurred with any other firearm.

Build-up from not cleaning gun for thousands of rounds. Again, causes same problem in any other gun--except Glock! ha, ha, ha

Aguila SSS ammunition: it's a 60-gr. bullet in a .22 Short case. It causes problems in every semi-auto with a barrel longer than five inches that I've even seen. Solution: S.B.R. it (N.F.A. rules apply) and install a 5-in. barrel. Problem solved.

Would I carry a 10/22 into a war zone as my primary? No.

Would I take it into the bush as my only game-getter, so long as there were no bears around for hundreds of miles. Yes, and I already have.

          It's a great little gun.

I think I need to get a couple 10/22's. I have a couple different .22's but I think the 10/22's sound like a fun gun. First I need to get a Davy Cricket to teach the kids. Son is 4 and daughter is 8. they both have shot pistol but the rifles are a little big for them. The Davy Cricket seems to be a good option for them.

I think those Davey Cricket guns are about the best introduction to responsible rifle shooting you could give to a child. It'll teach em good habbits about aiming and making shots count, too.
