for those of you considering getting a 4 X 4 vehicle this piece of equipment should be considered before the 5 CD player ...... also it does not appear that the links to Warn.com and Offroad.com are turning blue . I thought they were supposed to ... oh well ...
" POWER WINCHES "
Most of my friends who engage in off road driving , mudders as I call them , have a power winch on the front of their 4 wheel drive vehicle . Most of these friends have rarely used them unless a friend gets stuck in the mud . Power winches also take our boats and jet skis out of the water . I do have one friend who , besides the front mount , has a mount on the rear of his pick up truck as he likes the idea of playing tow truck when pulling out a stuck friend . He has on occasion used this rear winch set up for pulling things other than a stuck in the mud wrangler . But the thing about my friend using it for dragging a pallet of stuff or hauling out a log or logs goes outside the box for most of us . Anything that can be pulled in with a power winch he pulls . It has been used to pull an engine up and out of a car . No point in getting 4 friends to help throw out the old freezer - power winch it out of the garage - get it up to the curb and he saves himself a six pack of beer at least . We used one recently to move a trailer as the hitch is screwed up so rather than all that waiting for a new one to be put on - power winched it the 15 feet it had to go . Necessity is the mother of invention so when it comes to this particular piece of equipment it will do more than sit on your bumper waiting for that one friend who gets stuck on a Saturday in the mud hole . The power winch will do work for you when needed at that remote location where you may be building a shed or deer camp . I have also seen the cable tossed over a tree limb and then used to pull up the deer for gutting . Beats hand pulling any day . So whether a deer that needs to be hung up or an old freezer pulled from the garage or dragging your mother - in - law out of the house a power winch has many more uses than the standard " drag'em outta the mud " scenario . I am including the more famous brand " WARN " web site link for those of you who may be considering getting one . GoWarn.com Session Refresh . There are a lot of brands now coming out of china and prices vary depending on the size and brand .
When it comes to how big a power winch do I need ? Also understanding the torque involved along with power usage decreasing I am including here an article written for " Off Road Magazine " entitled " All about winches " . All About Winches - - Off-Road.com . I personally have a little 2 wheel drive Ford Ranger and at this time do not have a power winch for it . There is a kit which I must get first in order to mount it . I have decided when the time comes I will get a smaller one just big enough to handle my Ranger's Gross Vehicle weight . Getting one that is 1 1/2 times your vehicles GVW will not apply to the uses I have intended for it . Off course should one of my friends get stuck in their larger vehicle ? That will mean calling Triple A but that is another article . There are a thousand uses for a power winch so get the most out of your money and time invested on this piece of great equipment . I cannot wait till I get mine on . Crazy Joe in South Jersey
