Re: NASA's mission to bomb the moon
Tue, June 23, 2009 - 12:07 AMDid the Scientific America article link not show? You can also search on moon, bomb, NASA ...but it would appear that a lot of people think this is a jolly idea. I did read a blog post earlier that pointed out some of there...er...."issues" that could come up and pointed out that they've cut the funding to the MacDonald project but I can't find the blog now. Wish I'd bookmarked it at the time. -

Re: NASA's mission to bomb the moon
Tue, June 23, 2009 - 9:46 AMCrashing a probe into the moon...dumb.
Intentionally detonating a BOMB on the moon which they expect to blow a five mile wide crater.....I can't even find a word. --o-0-- And whyinhell would they shut down the MacDonald project just before they do this?
I keep getting a visual of tween-age boys, standing at the mouth of a huge cave that they are afraid to go into, throwing bigger and bigger rocks into the darkness.

Re: NASA's mission to bomb the moon
Tue, June 23, 2009 - 9:33 AMlittering the moon with massive pieces of steel seems like reather heavy-handed research.
like we haven't messed up our own planet enough, we have to start messing up other spheres as well.
firing a 50 CALI at a tree could hardly be considered as botanical research. -

Re: NASA's mission to bomb the moon
Tue, June 23, 2009 - 9:48 AMExcellent analogy.
We've got this one vehicle to get us where we're going...let's pop the hood and take a hammer to the flywheel, see what happens.

Re: NASA's mission to bomb the moon
Tue, June 23, 2009 - 2:03 PMhmmmmmm??? my guess is that we just want to show the world what our new bomb will do without blowing half of asia off the map. After it goes off and they measure the crater,,, gee this hole is about the same size as North Korea. -

Re: NASA's mission to bomb the moon
Wed, June 24, 2009 - 9:08 AMJust shoot it at the moon ,acidentally let it fall on N Korea and say it was a test gone WAY bad ???

Re: NASA's mission to bomb the moon
Wed, June 24, 2009 - 12:59 PMThe purpose of NASA's LCROSS mission is to look for signs of water below the lunar surface, specifically in a permanently-shadowed area of the Moon's South Pole. Locating water on the Moon would obviously be a huge boon to future extended human activity there, saving the cost of transporting it from Earth.
As far as a five-mile-diameter crater "damaging" the moon, Nature has already done that job. The lunar surface is COVERED with impact craters, layers and layers of them overlapping each other. The largest is over 1,500 miles in diameter. The LCROSS crater will be an inconsequential addition, one of over 6,000 named craters with diameters of five miles or more. -
