Yes, this is an excellent idea! What could *possibly* go wrong?

The purpose of NASA's LCROSS mission is to look for signs of water below the lunar surface, specifically in a permanently-shadowed area of the Moon's South Pole. Locating water on the Moon would obviously be a huge boon to future extended human activity there, saving the cost of transporting it from Earth.

As far as a five-mile-diameter crater "damaging" the moon, Nature has already done that job. The lunar surface is COVERED with impact craters, layers and layers of them overlapping each other. The largest is over 1,500 miles in diameter. The LCROSS crater will be an inconsequential addition, one of over 6,000 named craters with diameters of five miles or more.
