Kidding.
But has anyone ever seen that cable show Man vs. Wild, with Bear Grylls.
That dude parachutes into jungles, forests, snow, whatever, and has just a folding knife and flint, and he
can survive anything--just about. Dude is amazing.

Re: I Can Survive Anywhere With Just A Bottle-Opener
Thu, March 22, 2007 - 12:08 AMI much prefer Survivorman.
Bear takes too many unnecessary risks and does some dumb things, which may make for entertaining tv, but would be dangerous for other people to follow.
Just my two cents. -

Re: I Can Survive Anywhere With Just A Bottle-Opener
Thu, March 22, 2007 - 1:11 AMHe does take risks (it's his personality), and it is entertaining, but I look past that and notice that
this dude is really knowledgeable, intelligent, and accomplished.
I watch them both, but I prefer Man vs. Wild because Bear explains in more detail what he is doing while doing it.
Survivorman skips around a bit, and doesn't explain things as well, at least that is my perception.

Re: I Can Survive Anywhere With Just A Bottle-Opener
Thu, March 22, 2007 - 4:12 AMI agree Eddie. I also watch them both and I prefer Man v Wild for that reason. He does take a lot of risks, more so then I would ever do but he is also very capable of doing the things he does. I don't think he goes beyond his limits. I think, like Eddie said, he explains what he's doing in a lot more detail and he shows you how to do it. Whether you can physically do it is another issue but atleast he shows you and explains how. Thats what I like. -

Re: I Can Survive Anywhere With Just A Bottle-Opener
Thu, March 22, 2007 - 12:36 PMI have to admit I like them both. If my life was in danger and I needed a rescue, I'm not sure which one I would cast my lot with. Who would you guys pick?

Re: I Can Survive Anywhere With Just A Bottle-Opener
Thu, March 22, 2007 - 2:25 PMI think Bear. He just seem a little more adept to extreme situations. Plus, I always wonder why Surviorman carries around
a Leatherman type knife, it doesn't seem very logical to have a multi-tool in the wild. -
-
Re: I Can Survive Anywhere With Just A Bottle-Opener
Thu, March 22, 2007 - 2:56 PMI had to laugh a bit at your comment. My wife carries a Leatherman EVERYWHERE. Even overseas, though she has to check it thru luggage. I carry my Swiss Army Knife more than I wear my watch. -
-
Re: I Can Survive Anywhere With Just A Bottle-Opener
Thu, March 22, 2007 - 3:28 PMHa. I too carry a swiss army type knife just about everywhere. But when I go outback camping, I carry a Gator, similiar to the one Bear uses. The serrated blade is really useful, more so than a non-serrated blade.

I just don't see the point in having pliers, screwdrivers, etc, they just won't be used much in outback camping. Now easychair camping is another story. -

Thu, March 22, 2007 - 4:08 PMI carry my Gerber tool everywhere with me in my backpack and I usually have a Swiss army knife in my coat pocket, too. A girl can never be too prepared. -

Fri, March 23, 2007 - 4:29 PMOk, that kind of makes you McGyver-ish, which is cool, but if you like have a shower knife, and a pillow knife, then you
would start to freak me out. LOL.

Fri, June 22, 2007 - 9:27 PMSurvivorman does scenario's with broke down motorcycle's, bicycle's, snow mobile's and vehichle's in general. Guess his multi tool come's in handy when he's stripping wire's to tie thing's with and spoke's to make gig's. (even though I don't agree with the way he make's a gig) a multi tool would be perfect for stripping part's off a moter bike to use on down the trail.

Re: I Can Survive Anywhere With Just A Bottle-Opener
Sun, March 25, 2007 - 11:01 PMHmm. I find Bear Grylls a little irritating, but I've only seen his show a couple of times so I'm definitely open to giving it a chance. Not too sure why I never liked him more--- the fact that the name "bear" seems so unfitting? (He's a pale, rather flimsy-looking fellow). The sometimes overly dramatic jumping around & seemingly pointless stunts? (Like the time he broke the surface ice on a lake and jumped in--- "to show us not to do that", or leaping around smashing the bird eggs against the rock wall before eating them). I really like Survivorman, but there seem to be so few episodes. I've seen them all, some of them at least twice.

Re: I Can Survive Anywhere With Just A Bottle-Opener
Fri, March 23, 2007 - 7:35 AMI carry a Gerber multi-plier a Gerber folding box cutter and a Cold Steel blade called the Spike with me at all times....though nowadays traveling even on a bus you can lose your blades at switchpoints if they decide to have a search...I lost my first Gerber multi-plier in Gulfport when switching busses headed for New Orleans...I left N.O. with it on my hip---when all the way to Northeast Alabama, left there headed back for N.O. and lost it in Gulfport...they wouldn't let me back on the bus with it and wouldn't let me put it in my stowed bag..... -

Re: I Can Survive Anywhere With Just A Bottle-Opener
Fri, March 23, 2007 - 4:26 PMThe spike? That's not a utility or adventure knife, that's a weapon. I'd be scared to let you back on the bus too, if I saw you with that. LOL.
But muli-pliers---that was silly to not let you put it in your bag. They should notify passengers of regulations like that.

Re: I Can Survive Anywhere With Just A Bottle-Opener
Sat, March 24, 2007 - 9:29 AMi probably like man vs. wild more for the man than the advice but has anyone here ever studied tom brown jr.'s books?
there's someone with some mad skillz. he lived with an indian elder back east and learned all the "old ways" as a boy. he, in my opinion, is the king of tracking, thriving, and mastering the wilderness.
i don't have web info. to put up here but i'm sure you could google him. -

Re: I Can Survive Anywhere With Just A Bottle-Opener
Sat, March 24, 2007 - 9:50 AMI've taken Mr. Brown's courses, met him, had some pleasant conversations with the man. I know several family friends of Mr. Brown. He is an amazing individual, somewhat akin to Daniel Boone...as is he is the topic of many tall tales. That being said, when you actually see him track and explain his methods, he definitely knows his stuff.
His field guides are well written, and his one for children is excellent for any age.
I was honored to be asked to speak at his school last year on the topic of medicinal plants...unfortunately I had another teaching engagement that very week. This year, my youngest daughter will be attending his standard class here in California. She's the last Garcia to take a Tom Brown course. It almost brings a tear to my eye.

Bear Grylls vs. Les Stroud
Fri, May 4, 2007 - 9:29 PMHaving watched both shows entirely, I found this podcast doing an awesome comparison between Survivorman and Man vs. Wild. And there's a brilliant impersonation of Bear. LOL!

Re: I Can Survive Anywhere With Just A Bottle-Opener
Fri, June 8, 2007 - 12:02 AMI have not seen this show....I have seen Survivorman (Les Stroud)....seemingly he got inspiration from Dave Prineke (?) Twin Lakes, Alaska {Alone in the Wilderness}.....who I do enjoy is Ray Mears with his Extreme Survival and Bushcraft shows....when he is in Africa, South America with the Indigenous peoples...I get chills....I was also highly impressed with the one show that went back to the location where several Jews lived in the deep forests of Europe for years.....incredible... -

Re: I Can Survive Anywhere With Just A Bottle-Opener
Tue, June 19, 2007 - 8:03 AMi have to agree ray mears is awesome, i never saw the bear guy but it looks fun, who likes
the show mantracker. i have to say i was a bit dissapointed i often go to the woods
and survive for a few days with just a knife and was excited because a can opener
would be smaller to carry but i just bought a leatherman and it has a can opener on it.
i think im getting hooked to multitools, they are really good for urban survival, as well
as in the woods.

Fri, June 22, 2007 - 9:16 PMHey guy's, I saw a new bear grylls show tonight. Someday he's gonna jump off a bluff into a river and get a stump up his ass.
