I have watched a hundred movies where guys hid behind cars during a gun fight. Somehow I dont think hiding behind a little car like a Chevy Aveo or a Kia Rio will afford anyone any protection at all. It seems to me that cars are just sheet metal and plastic and other then the engine bullets would just pass right through them. Shotguns and handguns might have some difficulty but most high powered rifles that can blow through Cement blocks should be able to slice right through any car. I dont think hiding behind a car would be a good Idea in a gun fight. I would like to watch video of cars being shot with different calibers . Any help? Free

Re: Cars as protection?
Fri, August 7, 2009 - 1:04 PMI have put hole in old (thicker steel) car fenders with a cheap pellet gun before it wouldnt take much to punch thru the steel but with 'wider' calibers the impact will dissipate more force than the 'thin' stuff, it should still go thru though....even in the new zombie killing video games it is no longer safe to hide behind a car..it just takes some time for the guy writing the script in the movies to catch up to reality!

Fri, August 7, 2009 - 1:13 PMAny cover is better than no cover. Its always a good idea to be on the move as much as you can. I know what parts to shoot at to disable a moving vehicle and hit the passengers inside as well as what amunition will do the job. Always assume that your attackers have this knowledge as well and use defensive tactics accordingly. -

Re: Cars as protection?
Fri, August 7, 2009 - 1:38 PMI know Bonnie and Clydes car was riddled with holes that went all the way through both sides of the car. That was older thicker steel then. These little tin can cars are no protection at all in my opinion. I would like to see some video of cars and test bullets. Im looking for some now. Free

Re: Cars as protection?
Fri, August 7, 2009 - 9:23 PMI found several sites for making your car bullet proof cost a fortune ha ha ha . I could not find one video of an actual rifle fired at a car. But there several sites that talked about even 9mm in fmj(parabellum) going right through a car door. One site said that fat bullets and hollow points were stopped more then full metal jacketed rounds. One guy said a .44 mag would blow through both sides. But anyway Rifles will all shoot right through a car so hiding behind a car is a real bad Idea if someone is shooting at you. -

Re: Cars as protection?
Fri, August 7, 2009 - 9:48 PMAn arrow can pierce a car door. A sword can pierce the hood of a car.
I've seen a bullet stuck in the side of a tire. And it was larger than a .22 LR.
Meaning...I'd hide behind a tire or engine block if possible.

Re: Cars as protection?
Fri, August 7, 2009 - 10:45 PMBack in the day when it was still semi legal we good shooting out in the desert, if there was an abandoned junker we would of course shot it.
A .38 or larger caliber when go thru a car door at close range (30 to 50 feet) .22 would some time go thru the outer skin of the door, some times not depending on the angle of impact. A 50 cal BP would punch thru the doors on both sides. 12guage slug the some. Rifle fire dosen't even notice a car door. YMMV. I do Sheet metal work and start hole for collars with a knife. I can stab a knife thru 22 gage metal. and most modern cars panel are lighter then that.
If I was using a car for cover I try to get the engine between me and the shooter. Of course, unless your are very lucky a few rounds into the engine compartment will damage some thing important. But being shot at now trumps driving later:) If you win you can take the bad guy car.

Re: Cars as protection?
Sat, August 8, 2009 - 12:54 AMThe past I love about Hollywood is how 'cover' and 'concealment' are the same thing. While what you said about a car (not to mention the fact that most agencies train on how to skip rounds/shot under a car) my favorite example would have to be walls. How many movies have you seen where the good guy is duck in and out of a doorway or around a corner and the bad guy just can't seem to take him down? That is some STRONG drywall. -

Re: Cars as protection?
Sat, August 8, 2009 - 7:05 AMThe best one could hope for when hiding behimd a car is deflection, I seen a video a long time ago, made by I think the Vegina militia,
that showed the bullit deflection from .22 - .50, on diferent items. Things like a bush, windows, and even cars. it also had some Glaser safty slugs(spelling?) demos, It was a good video. I've been looking for it ever since '91! -

Re: Cars as protection?
Mon, August 10, 2009 - 6:56 PMI have had the opportunity to shoot a few cars and have found this:
Car doors can be penetrated by small calibers easily unless thebullet strikes a support beam or heavy framework. Having your window up makes it easier to get through the door.
Engines willstop a bullet, but they can go through the engine compartment pretty easily.
Wheels and axles are a good place to use as a shield. 2 tires and a solid axle will stop most bullets or render them far less lethal anyhow.
The trunk and back seat provide very little protection and mostly serve to plug the hollowpoint so it will not expand reliably in your back.
In other words, there are some things in cars that will stop bullets, but most of the car will not. It may deflect or deform the bullet, but there is still a hunk of lead zinging through the car you are in. If you are in the car when the shooting starts, zoom away. -

Fri, August 14, 2009 - 4:28 AM5.56 mm shoots through APC, car would be like butter.
3 or 4 foot of dirt stops most rounds :)

Re: Cars as protection?
Mon, August 17, 2009 - 10:21 PMI wonder how much protection busses can provide. If I were shooting at someone using the tires or engine as cover, I would try to rupture the gas tank of that vehicle. Or throw a molotov' at them.Molotov's are fun! -

Re: Cars as protection?
Fri, August 21, 2009 - 8:27 PMAny vehicle, bus, car, truck, will stop some bullets but not others simply because of their path. The support beams in your car will stop rounds up to 50 cal in some places. Then an inch away you get penetration with a 22mag. Most of your car is penetratable with a pistol. Doors are about 60% open, depending on if the window is uyp or down.
The windshield will deflect a 38 fired at an angle
Most hollowpoints (that are not hydrashoks) will fill up with glass and fail to expand.
Shooting cars has been a part of many of the Law Enforcement studies on stopping power and ammunition tests like the FBI study. The latter study was one third shooting at cars. In this area the shok prevailed over the others. Try googling FBI study on wounds and ballistics.
