Valley or ridge-top?

I'm wondering which you feel is safer, more defensible, and why. I'm a fan of the valley, with limited points of entry, difficult to find, but I've heard different views here and in some reading on castles and forts.

I'm sure it depends somewhat on the type of threat. I'm thinking as long as we man/woman the ridgetops we are good.

Not that I'll be moving, but I should know what the weaknesses are. Enlighten me please!

Hi, all. I'm new here.
Scenario: You and your family will comfortably holed up at your retreat, as you have planned ahead. The main plan is to start building a tight knit community, you have room for 9 more people. Skills that are already covered: sewing, hunting, ammo & arms knowledge, cooking, baking, growing food, herbal wisdom, & carpentry.
I appreciate all of your input! Michelle

WHAT RIFLE SHOULD I HAVE ?????

I was given someone's opinion / concern on this topic as they are wondering what to do / get . We legal gun owners , in this group of friends, learned on the M-16 and M-1Garand . We own AR -15's . We do not have one single AK 47 . period . Years ago it was decided ( group wide ) not to get anymore . 223's but to all go with the . 308 caliber . One size ammo so sharing is simplified . This enabled elk hunting as well as the smaller deer . From our training perspective not being able to hit an elk and kill it over a long distance made owning a .223 a poor choice . Some/ most in the group own a variey of .30 - 06 's . This is the one nice large caliber with excellent knock down power at 1000 yards . Do you want to own a rifle that puts you 200 yards from the bear or do you want to be able to knock down the bear at 900 yards ??? do the yards into feet . get it ? good ! For those that think a .308 or . 30 - 06 is to much power at close range , therefore not a good weapon choice , OR TO HEAVY TO CARRY ??? wahhhhh wahhhhh - ask your WW II grandfather or Korean War Grandfather before he dies . They are dying by the 1000's everyday now . Not much time left to hear the truth . I know a good man named Art . He is maybe 5'5" and weighs about 120 pounds . He was 19 and humped korea the whole time with a BAR with extra ammo . None of you knows how heavy that is but Art did it everyday plus field pack in the snow , rain and 100 * hot sun . How close do you want to be to the bear ?????? oh or mountain lion : )

Absolute 24/7 must haves ?

I was wondering what your list of absolutely necessary must haves are to keep with you 24/7 no matter what. I know about the goodies needed in a bug out bag, but it's not always on my person. In the truck yes, but not always with me when I'm away from the truck shopping or attending a festivel etc. So what do you think is required to be with you at ALL times for your survival?

Dear Sir,
Beginning on February 1, 2011, AB 962 requires retailers to create a registry of handgun ammunition buyers by doing such things as:
1 Obtain the buyer’s thumbprint.
2 Record the buyer’s driver’s license information.
3 Transaction records must be kept by retailer “for a period of not less than five years from the date of the recorded transfer.”
4 Records “shall be subject to inspection at any time during normal business hours by any peace officer…”
This bill admits that its purpose is to create new crimes. The Brady Campaign claims this bill “seeks to prevent gun violence by reducing the easy access to ammunition by criminals, gang members, the dangerously mentally ill and other persons prohibited form possessing firearms and ammunition.” As with all gun control, this about being seen to be “doing something about crime.”This is very curious, because the next article will show that California stands among the few remaining criminal-friendly states by ensuring that decent folk can’t defend themselves.California’s “assault weapons” law, passed in 1989, resulted in confiscation of heretofore legal guns owned by heretofore law-abiding citizens. So California already has a history of using registration records to unilaterally initiate confiscation. Australia and the United Kingdom used registration records to confiscate firearms, following enactment of their gun bans.AB 962 won’t stop drug gangs–which have established, successful smuggling conduits into the state–from simply adding ammunition to their shopping lists. The United Kingdom, surrounded by ocean, has seen an increase in “gun crime” since enacting a nearly-total gun ban in 1997. It’s hard to see how California can secure its borders better than the UK.

I am stocking up before this goes into effect AND I will be MOVING OUT OF THIS STATE AS SOON AS I CAN! In the words of a character in a movie you were in, Total Recall, "FUCK YOU YOU ASSHOLE!"

I am so over californias failure to read the constitution. BTW I have been UNEMPLOYED for well over a year so you make no money off of me except the fiat paper helecopter Ben keeps printing like Mugabe.

I cant believe I have defended your position of office to my friends and family now that I can clearly see the TERMINATOR is a pansey!

Without any respect since none has been earned,

Random question.

If you survive a dissaster, would you be in the mindset of everyman (or woman) for themselves, or would you try to team up with others to save your community as a whole? This includes good people who weren't prepared enough. Gunfights and canniballistic cowboys aside, If you had a chance would you think it is worth the effort? To either escape and bug out, or establish order in your community. Like helping people who are getting brutalised and raped. Sharing some of your skills to provide food and power for everyone and organise leadership.
Some people would rather just escape into solitude with their family and align with no one. That is very understandable and is the only option for some.

This question is not to judge, I am just curious and would like to know what you would do and why.

We've all been faced with this scenario:

Your (family member, co-worker, neighbor, friend) who may have discovered over the years that you're one of the more disaster-prepared individuals of society.... They make you the butt of jokes, talk about tinfoil hats etc....

And somewhere toward the tail-end of the survivalist-jabbing conversation, they make a comment to the effect of ''Well, I know where to take MY family if something bad happens" with a nudge and a smile.

Let's kick around some thoughts and feelings about these so-called friends who reserve their own seats at your food-storage table and in your fallout shelter. How do you deal with these situations?

Think on this: (hypothetical situation) You want your family with you in an EOW scenario, and your sister would be a beneficial addition to your camp. Her husband is another story entirely; a complete drain, no valuable skills, and he's a BIG guy who eats enough for 2 adults. In real life, he's useless, and you can't fathom him changing. What decision do you make? This is your future too.

For how long, 1,5,20 years? Do you have the supplies and ammo for even 6 months of fighting? Your barrel will be shot out after a short time at that rate. Will communities survive or form during the chaos or will Mitch rule the world?

Everyone take a good look at your antivirus. We detected a spy here who was attemping to extract information from our computer from his . I dont know which one of you it is (YET) but I will find out. The Trojan horse was pretty advanced . Maybe even government not sure yet but my buddy is tracking the components used in the virus. If you are not sure about your status google Spybot and buy spy doctor antivirus for 39.95. It will clean you out . I got rid of it after a long chase. It kept morphing into other files until I launched spy doctor. I sent a copy on disc to by buddy who took it apart. In case it is a hacker( indenty thief) I am freezing all accounts on line.

As Kathy the moderator states " a place to share secrets " ........so here goes ......... PLEASE NOTE THIS IS ILLEGAL ( in NJ anyway ) in the re sale of the vehicle unless stated the airbag is gone so being sold " as is " .............. my glove box is to small for a CB radio ........ I figure I will take out the passenger side airbag as the plastic cover looks pretty big therefore plenty of room .........well it was to small for a CB but there is plenty of room for some extra goodies ........ with a single edge razor blade I gently cut the seam .......it popped off easy ........ removed the airbag and gas canister .... there is a metal frame for the air bag space .... but ... since there are openings to the sides and bottom which would allow things to fall through i cut cardboard for the sides and bottom ( also the top just to make it even and neat ) - used duct tape on the seams .......... for the outside cover I bought a velcro kit consisting of about 8 pieces of velcro 6 " long ........ I cut the velcro to fit on the stubs top and bottom and full length for each side ....... virtually undetectable as 3 friends in LE couldn' t figure out what I did till I got my finger nails on the top seam and popped off the " air bag dash board cover " ........ how's that for sharing a secret Kathy ...................... crazy joe

If you would like to keep in touch please message me and we can exchange emails. I will still be online for email and business, just no more cruising the online comunities for a while. So before I begin babbling, I'm saying good buy for now. I'll check messages for a few days and then I'm off of here.

Here's the deal... due to recent events beyond my control I am in need of becoming completely independend and able to survive on my own. I have no education past high school, I have no work experience or skills because I have spent my life taking care of my family. I'm in my late 40's, over weight and out of shape. No money, no vehicle, nothing. I was born with a condition that basically leaves me with heat exhaustion permanently. I am completely on my own. What do I do? Any thoughts?

You live in a semi-shitty borough of a major American city. When Corporate Whitey wastes the prez at a press conference in Atlanta, your city goes up in a flames like a haybarn in a lightning storm. It's Rodney King times 50. Race war. You are white, like me. Or light-skinned. Or wealthy. Or you have a really nice car and house. Forget politics, it's a fight for your life. Cars are burning in the street, right outside your house. The neighbors - one is dead on the lawn, one is running down the street on fire, one is getting beaten with a lawn chair in your driveway. One is getting capped in the knees. Gangbangers are closing in on your house from all sides. What is your defense? Your offense? Do you hole up or bug out? How much damage do you do? How much damage can you take? Remember: This is America. We're all free to do whatever we want to each other once the cops loot Wal Mart. Wake up and smell the smoke. The war is on.

Just who are these 'bad guys'?

I get so confused. Could someone give me a simplified list of bad guys, who they are, how they started(how old are they), what their motive/objective is, what they do and where their seat of power is? Maybe a paragraph for each one. That would be so awesome, I think I'm not the only one who could lose some ignorance here.

We all hear about the NWO, the illuminati, the bildeberg whatever, the jewish something or other... what were those guys? There are probably dozens of 'secret society factions' that I've heard and more that i have not heard of.

Can someone break it down and straighten out this bag of snakes for me?

My boss tells me that her neighbors, in a nice upper-middle class community somewhere south of Oaktown, had their house burglarized two nights ago. The burglars entered and exited the house THREE TIMES in the night, carting off loot! Because they had 2 young kids upstairs in the house, the couple was too scared to even call the cops until after the burglars had left for good.

My advice to my boss was: You and your husband need to each buy a semi-auto 9mm or larger caliber handgun, plus a 12 gauge pump, and keep them with you at night, so that you can rest assured that there is no way in hell any intruder will ever make it into your end of the house.

Thoughts?

Anyone going to watch Spike's Surviving Disaster?

I was just wondering if anyone was planning to watch Spike TV's new series Surviving Disaster? It starts tomorrow night and it looks like it might be interesting.

From www.spike.com : What will you do when disaster strikes? Spike TV's new original series Surviving Disaster, led by Navy SEAL Cade Courtley, vividly takes viewers through catastrophic scenarios and arms them with the knowledge needed to survive the unthinkable. Courtley tackles worst-case scenarios and equips viewers with the practical information needed to save their own lives and the lives of their loved ones. Whether the threat is natural or man-made or on a national or personal level, Courtley speaks directly to the viewers and guides them through a comprehensive, step-by-step process to not only survive the big picture disaster, but endure the many dangerous obstacles that may occur within each catastrophic event. While leading viewers out of danger, Courtley not only provides helpful tips and hands-on instruction, but swiftly points out common misconceptions and fatal mistakes. Unlike any other series, Surviving Disaster may actually save lives by providing actions that anyone can perform.

How do YOU keep cool when the sun is beating down like invisible lava upon the strafed urban waste, and your AC is permanently kapoot?

My low-tek hippie heat cure: Peel off your socks (careful - don't want to take that top layer of skin with them! ;-)) and dip your feet in ice water. It'll cool your whole body down in about 20 seconds. Truth be told, it works great if you find a creek when you are on the trail on a hot summer day. The relief is veritably instantaneous, I do declare.

There's also the cross-draft concept, which may or may not work in your habitat, depending on placement of windows and doors in relation to the outside air currents and thermal drafts. But the idea is, you open doors and windows and let a draft naturally develop. Out with the hot, in with the cool. Fans can assist. Unfortunately, habitats are not designed with this in mind. In August my apt stays hot til 3:00 AM. However, I have lived in places where spraying down the patio with a hose noticeably cooled the air running thru the house.

Am told a strategically placed micro-pond outside your habitat can help lower the temp. Saw that at Arcosanti in AZ.

Attic fans. SOLAR attic fans. Extreme effectivity, specially ten years down the road, after Iraq dries up and Putin first-strikes Prudhoe Bay and the electrical grid goes down...forever.

Keep it coming.

Goats. Milk, cheese, meat, hides, draft, companionship. Small enough and sufficiently available that most folks could acquire and keep them.

My sisterfriend boards my goats with her goats. If/when SHTF, the goats are already trained to load up into any available vehicle (we used to transport ours in a Subaru station wagon!) *or* to take their place in a rope line and lead out. Goats on a rope line can also carry packs, and some of ours are comfortable doing that; others of them are trained to draft.

I have watched a hundred movies where guys hid behind cars during a gun fight. Somehow I dont think hiding behind a little car like a Chevy Aveo or a Kia Rio will afford anyone any protection at all. It seems to me that cars are just sheet metal and plastic and other then the engine bullets would just pass right through them. Shotguns and handguns might have some difficulty but most high powered rifles that can blow through Cement blocks should be able to slice right through any car. I dont think hiding behind a car would be a good Idea in a gun fight. I would like to watch video of cars being shot with different calibers . Any help? Free

Reality check

So, here is a great reality check on your physical shape: Drop and do 30 pushups, nonstop.

So, could you do all 30 pushups, marine regulation pushups, and not those wobbly pussy pushups they do in the air force? Were you light headed when you got done or was it easy?

I bring this up because a physical confrontation with another human being exerts more energy than two minutes of pushups. If you cannot do 30 pushups then your ass is going to be kicked easily.

Well, did you do it, you buncha cocksmokers?

Modern Day American Survivalist Hero

We are in awe of this guy. He left his suburban home at 17,went to live in a tepee living in one for most of the rest of his life. He's now 41 or so. He spent most of his life living off the land, travelling, living with various Native American Tribes. "Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without." is one of his credo's.

He hiked the Appalachian Trail with no provisions, kayaked rivers, rode a horse from coast to coast in 103 days, has created fires by rubbing sticks together and through all that he managed to acquire 1,000 acres in North Carolina [by cashing in on his weird lifestyle and making loads of appearnces thus raising the money] The property is a preserve where he teaches people skills of survival, wilderness living and more.. His story is amazing.

He's had a book written about him, a documentary film made of his way of living and I'm sure there's gonna be a big time feature in the works.. wonder who'll play him..

More about the great American hero here http://www.pierresoleil.com/ourblog/
with love and blessings

Since the new moderator/dictator of the Preemptive Postapocalyptic Tribe has taken to deleteing threads> Two threads deleted today. I have chosen to post on this sister tribe where many of you are members of the Postapocalyptic Tribe. Since posts are deleted on a whim over there.

RICK has decided that he has the right to delete threads merely on a whim... Its is against Tribe policy RICK to delete threads where no tribe infractions have taken place.

Rick tool exception to a video posted by a member, and felt the need to mock, and attack that member. I informed RICK that such behavior comung from a moderator was unexceptable. Rather then take his lumps RICK deletes the whole thread. I than posted another thread asking RICK what gave him the right to Delete some ones elses thread when no Tribe violations had been committed? Rather than give an answer RICK deleted that thread as well...

Copy of the last deleted thread below. I made a copy because I new the new dictator was going to deep six it. If RICK won't allow free discourse he has no place being a moderator on tribe. RICK needs to GO!
RICK the new dictator didn't like a video B posted, and resorted to

The other night when I was sewing, I started thinking about how precious something as commonplace as needles, pins, and similar items could become in a survival situation and I started wondering how needles could be produced by hand so I googled around and found this:

So here is a practical exam for you cocksmokers:

You are stranded in the middle of nowhere with nothing but the clothes you are wearing. You need to make a spear but have no tools. How do you make a sharp stick to fish or hunt with? What do you sharpen it with, how do you harden it? How do you keep it from splitting? Do you add a wrapped handle?

This tribe has become nice and cerebral* during my absence. You all talk the interweb talk, but what are you really doing to prepare for an EOW situation? When was the last time you hiked back into the woods eight or nine miles and lived for days, or conquered a high peak, or pushed yourself more than your usual donut run? What have you pussies done lately to harden yourselves?

I'll go first. This week I won in my division and weight class during a cage fight this week. then I went to a friend's house and banged her brains out for three hours, then I climbed a 12000 foot mountain with a fifty pound pack.

That mutherfucker went down like a sack of potatoes.

Rabbit Starvation

At one point I wanted to raise rabbits for food and fur. They multiply quickly, get the most meat for a modest feed investment, and are pretty tasty. I was sad to learn that one cannot live solely off rabbit meat. I heard that it causes you to basically starve because the meat is so lean. Has anyone else heard of this, and have any info on exactly what it does, and how to avoid starving from just eating rabbits? P.S. I don't intend on eating only rabbits, but if the SHTF you never know.

I started hanging out there and made a comment about tribes and survivalist. I got a Pm from a Guy who said he was hanging out here on tribes for about year. He said he left in June, didnt say who he was. His name there is Kingfish. But hey this site has sub forums about everything and anything survival related. It moves so fast the topics are two pages deep in one day. Check it out.

this was ambivert's idea, and title. i agree.

goats are clean, efficient, gentle, tasty but are certainly the anarchist of the farm animal world.
they require great fencing, or you'll never keep them in.
meat, milk, and if you raise the right ones, fibre and wool.

i've been doing some investigation into pygmy goats.
smaller carcasses could solve many problems for those of us who don't have fridges/freezers.

A lot of threads on this tribe have focused on what things to buy or what land to buy. What about a list of essential skills - a minimal list of things we can all learn. These should be everyman skills that we can all hope to learn, not specialties that would require us to quit our day jobs. Kind of like the basic emergency kit, but in skill set rather than items.

here ya go, darkling.

when tshtf, beer need not go the way of many luxuries.
barley is easy to grow, or trade with a farm neighbour.
malting, roasting and brewing is a learned art, but not rocket science.
people who stockplie canned goods could easily stockpile malt extract if they don't want to malt their own.
5lbs of malt extract, 5 lbs of honey makes a lovely beer.
beer is not a luxury. it's a staple.

Using the *Review* section

I've been hunting around this tribe for reviews on various things...one being the vendors of dehydrated / freeze-dried foods. The *Review* section is, uh, to be polite, very slim pickings.

I don't particularly want to clutter the topics section with reviews and would like to ask folks to post relevant reviews to that section - especially for us newbies who could use a clue.

...people skills, including children

At Darkling's suggestion, I'm starting this to continue the post on the "essential skill" of parenting. We all have our way of parenting our children and I don't want to get into that. It's a personal thing between you and yours. Suffice it to say, I've given some thought to how my kidlets will respond to *orders* during an emergency situation......and I've got a bit of work to do ;-).

But what about the adults - family, friends or strangers - that have no clue? If you're the strong personality type and seem to know what you're doing, these folks will gravitate to you. Could you *parent* your opinionated father-in-law? How are you going to handle adult siblings that fight about everything? And then, there's that ever-flighty friend you dearly love...

I'm coming at this from the perspective of a person who's never had to deal with adversity or hardship. I've gone about my daily life as if it's always going to be there - plenty of gas at the pumps, grocery stores totally stocked and lights that come on when I flip a switch. What could be coming at us -real soon- scares the dickens out of me. So, not only do I have to deal with things for myself......there's my kidlets......then there's the family who live in the area......and then family I may not be able to reach......and that dearly-loved friend.

It's all well and good to say I'd bunker in here and the heck with the rest of them. But that's just not realistic. Looks like I've got some more thinking to do......

I watched this last night and it is pretty lame. Just common sense stuff and that one ladies hair. lol Oh, my goodness! But it was still good to be reminded of the basics. And I think it's cool that these people cared enough to make this documentary. Or whatever you want to call it. Instructional video? Whatev. Has anyone seen this one? If so what do you think? If not, if you do eventually, please do let us know what you think. And if anyone has any good recommendations of similar types of videos please do share. Thanx.

POWER WINCHES

for those of you considering getting a 4 X 4 vehicle this piece of equipment should be considered before the 5 CD player ...... also it does not appear that the links to Warn.com and Offroad.com are turning blue . I thought they were supposed to ... oh well ...
" POWER WINCHES "

Most of my friends who engage in off road driving , mudders as I call them , have a power winch on the front of their 4 wheel drive vehicle . Most of these friends have rarely used them unless a friend gets stuck in the mud . Power winches also take our boats and jet skis out of the water . I do have one friend who , besides the front mount , has a mount on the rear of his pick up truck as he likes the idea of playing tow truck when pulling out a stuck friend . He has on occasion used this rear winch set up for pulling things other than a stuck in the mud wrangler . But the thing about my friend using it for dragging a pallet of stuff or hauling out a log or logs goes outside the box for most of us . Anything that can be pulled in with a power winch he pulls . It has been used to pull an engine up and out of a car . No point in getting 4 friends to help throw out the old freezer - power winch it out of the garage - get it up to the curb and he saves himself a six pack of beer at least . We used one recently to move a trailer as the hitch is screwed up so rather than all that waiting for a new one to be put on - power winched it the 15 feet it had to go . Necessity is the mother of invention so when it comes to this particular piece of equipment it will do more than sit on your bumper waiting for that one friend who gets stuck on a Saturday in the mud hole . The power winch will do work for you when needed at that remote location where you may be building a shed or deer camp . I have also seen the cable tossed over a tree limb and then used to pull up the deer for gutting . Beats hand pulling any day . So whether a deer that needs to be hung up or an old freezer pulled from the garage or dragging your mother - in - law out of the house a power winch has many more uses than the standard " drag'em outta the mud " scenario . I am including the more famous brand " WARN " web site link for those of you who may be considering getting one . GoWarn.com Session Refresh . There are a lot of brands now coming out of china and prices vary depending on the size and brand .
When it comes to how big a power winch do I need ? Also understanding the torque involved along with power usage decreasing I am including here an article written for " Off Road Magazine " entitled " All about winches " . All About Winches - - Off-Road.com . I personally have a little 2 wheel drive Ford Ranger and at this time do not have a power winch for it . There is a kit which I must get first in order to mount it . I have decided when the time comes I will get a smaller one just big enough to handle my Ranger's Gross Vehicle weight . Getting one that is 1 1/2 times your vehicles GVW will not apply to the uses I have intended for it . Off course should one of my friends get stuck in their larger vehicle ? That will mean calling Triple A but that is another article . There are a thousand uses for a power winch so get the most out of your money and time invested on this piece of great equipment . I cannot wait till I get mine on . Crazy Joe in South Jersey

Wood for Friction Fires

Last year at BOSS, the field director gave us an ice cream challenge - for every 5 'new-to-us' woods we managed to bust a coal with, he would award us a pint of organic ice cream (in Southern Utah, this was quite appealing :) Suddenly we were all trying woods we had never thought to use before, with mixed success.

I read one article (will try to properly reference it later) in which the author had conducted scientific experiments on friction fires. He concluded that the challenge was to heat the wood to 800 degrees before it started fragmenting. Many woods in his experiments started coming apart at around 700 degrees, which is why (he argues) many woods give lots of smoke but no ember.

So - my question to all of you is what woods have you tried and with what success? Hopefully we will get responses from all over, and learn some new ones to try.

Equally important - what was the secret to busting a coal with each of these woods? Some (like aspen) require more speed and less pressure, while others respond well to a lot of down pressure. I theorize that the woods that want to fragment before 800 degrees can sometimes be finessed with high speed/light pressure, combined of course with endurance and patience :)

a young lady in a reply post expressed wanting to know - how and where she should go ... she asked about virginia and also does elevation make a difference or reason to go somewhere ... the way she worded it made me believe she has no clue and no planning as of yet ... also no understanding of the variables that go into a " bug out " location ... as i told her off post every person , every situation is different .. also bugging out should be an almost last resort procedure .. one does not bug out because the urbanites are setting fire to los angeles again .... she is in maryland ...... i have friends who live in various parts of maryland ... i was just there 5 weeks ago in the lovely rolling hills on the road hagerstown .... maryland is one place some of my friends would rendevous in ... they are not necessarily leaving maryland .... so here on post i will give an example as to where to go to ........... ok first a scenario is needed .......hummm .....swine flu overated ........nuclear blasts on DC and Baltimore ..to much chaos ... .. let me think ............. FEAR .....thats a good one ......... muslims get a nuke to New York City ....... BOOM .... ( its ok i do not like the giants , yankees or mets ) .... this creates nationwide panic ...and you can be sure every TV network will be showing the chaos with late breaking news .....people could be heading out to the hils in great masses ........ sorry but the easy pass lanes wont be open either ...... oh you have easy pass ?? to bad ....... following such a catastrophe looting / rioting in various cities could happen ....... dont forget a thousand variables exist even for the same scenario.. .. it may happen on a large scale or not .. or just a few isolated cases ....economic chaos in the days following is almost a given ...... my friends on the peninsula would hang tight ...watch and see .....those below DC like the area below Lexington Park .... easy boat access across the channel to the peninsula and those with the beer beyond Cambridge .. ...those north of DC and Baltimore would immediatly consider the " leaving options " .... the roads going anywhere towards Frederick - clogged possibly , ok probably but then again who is to say .. it depends on the FEAR FACTOR and how many morons rush to " jump ship " .........the back roads of upper Frederick , Carroll and Harford Counties would be ok for a while .... here the direction is to go to Hagerstown area or up onto southern Pennsylvania as some friends would do .. ...... friends between Cumberland ( Allegany County ) and Hagerstown ( Washington County ) would also stay put as the situation dictates ...and see which friends shows up . ... for the sake of agruement ......Lower Frederick County and Montgomery County ......the few small back road bridges that exist on the upper Potomac would be full of those locals .......tough call ... ...... My suggestion first is to get more than the one friend you have for your network ......... buy the state map ........ look at where you are ............... put a 7 inch plate centered to your location ... draw the circle around the edge of the plate . ........look at the scale of the map - one inch equals how many miles ??? who would you know in a 360 degree radius of you .. friends , cousins , college friends ,etc......what are their locations ?? center city Baltimore or DC ........screw them ....... who else and where are they ?? anyone over the border in West Virginia or Virginia ?? we have done this a hundred times if not a thousand as farmland , rural routes have become housing developements over the past 30 years ......... 2 lane roads have become 4 lane roads ........ population density has changed ........forest land replaced with malls ........ get yourself the map - pinpoint who you know and where they are in regards to your location .......

The Gaels called it "uisge-beatha". The Romans built Hadrian's Wall to keep the crazy highlanders out, but they still traded for what they called "Aqua Vitae". There's an old Dublin street ballad about it, called "Finnegan's Wake", that inspired James Joyce to write a novel.

Does anyone want to share some secrets for the fine old art of moon shining?

Weather Reading

Why do you need to know how to read weather?

If you are without modern technology, there are lots of reasons. You may be traveling and need to know what you will be facing (or even whether to hole up for a few hours). You may have to decide whether to risk a slot canyon (subject to flash floods), whether you can cross a lake (shallow lakes can get especially dangerous/choppy during a storm), etc.

If you are farming, it might affect when you plant or harvest. At the end of a long day, it could determine whether you need to work even later to erect a shelter or cover fire wood.

Our ancestors did not have satellites or even barometers, but they could still spot incoming weather fronts and changes in barometric pressure. And they generally stayed in an area long enough to learn local weather patterns. 'Patterns' is the key. If only you will pay attention to your local patterns, using the five senses you have on your body, you can learn to read the weather too. Maybe not a week in advance, but pretty reliably 24 hours in advance. Very reliably 4-5 hours in advance. Which can be life or death away from civilization.

Even when you do have access to the weather channel, comparing their images to what you see outside can be a fun hobby!

So this thread will be about how to read the weather, including the best resources I have found for further study.

Sewing is an essential skill - at least, in a household with rough-n-tumble kidlets ;-)
Good hand sewing (and machine sewing) skills are needed to patch clothes and repair zippers to making blankets from old t-shirts to stitching up cuts (human or animal).

I'm sure there're more websites available, but these should be helpful to those who have little or no sewing skill

Are YOU ready to 'transform' YOUR life?

((I guess we all think about it - changing our lives drastically - but do we trust ourselves enough to take the leap? We talk about 'transformation' and give advices, dream of a 'golden age' - yet, how many DO take action?))

Bulletin Mars 31, 2009
http://mwcnews.net/content/view/29597/26/
By MWC NEWS

Scientists Who Trust Their Own Evidence Take Action

How much longer will you continue believing that the same system that created global warming and financial collapse has the ability to fix it? Here are actions to take:

It seems to me that we are at the go/no-go moment in terms of preventing the methane tipping point from avalanching into unstoppable global warming.

It could the moment for scientists around the world who trust their own global warming evidence to withdraw from the system that propagates the global warming.

Withdrawal from the system is neither symbolic nor philosophical.
Withdrawal is swift, total and drastic.

The intention is to proactively collapse the carbon economy to give humanity a chance to change direction.

This would require great personal efforts and sacrifice on the part of the scientists. It would impact our families, teams, companies and organizations with a radical change of plans. It would also require you to take your own work seriously. If you do not trust your evidence enough to take direct personal action, why should someone else?

If our withdrawal could critically disable the carbon economy, its rapid demise would avoid even greater suffering from flood, draught, worldwide famine, and continued resource wars.

Abandoning modern culture proactively as a result of trusting scientific evidence would prove that human intelligence exists. It would be like steering a careening brakeless automobile into the hillside to stop it rather than doing nothing. By intentionally crashing the car someone might survive. Flying off the cliff is suicide for all.

The choice is not actually up to political authorities.
The choice is up to the creative powerhouse behind the industrial machine:
you, the scientists, engineers, programmers, designers, technicians and researchers keeping things going.

To continue a carbon-hungry consumer lifestyle in the face of recent climate-change knowledge makes us no more intelligent than bacteria, consuming beyond the carrying capacity of our resources and dieing in our own wastes.

Withdrawal is simple and effective.
It is nonviolent noncooperation with whatever is nonsustainable.

This would include:

* Quit your job, because almost no organization including
corporate, government, military, and education are sustainable
– business assumes it is possible to externalize true costs.

* Sell your car, change to bicycle, public transportation, horse, and walking.

* Become basically vegetarian.

* Create community; learn the soft skills of village weaving.

* Find your people, create sustainable culture
– not money-based but collaboration-based
– collaboration is wealth, power and satisfaction.

* Establish local authority and local autonomy.

* Move out of your house or off-the-grid, e.g. straw bale passive solar, etc.
see: off-grid-net
http://www.off-grid.net

* With your people grow most of your own food without fertilizers, pesticides, or tractors.

* Avoid imported foods such as bananas, pineapples, out of season fruits, spices, coffee, chocolate, sugar.

* Avoid fast food chains – they abuse third world labor and resources, pumping money away from third world economy and your local economy.

* Move away from mainstream pharmaceuticals and learn alternative healing and preventative health care.

* Home school the children, learning together how to heal yourselves of TPP
(technopenuriaphobia – the fear of the loss of technology,
as explained in the book Radiant Joy Brilliant Love www.radiant-joy.com).

* Recognize the Second Copernican Revolution, that people do not own nature. Nature owns people. Nature and people both have more value than money.

* Learn to make or grow most everything you need: shaving cream, soap, toothpaste, shampoo, toilet paper, etc.

* Shift from the disposable mentality (throw away things when they break) to repairable mentality.

* Stop using petrochemical plastics, packaging, newspapers, mail order catalogues.

* Refuse to make any garbage at all, recycle everything (look in your garbage – it reveals the nonsustainable part of your lifestyle).

* Stop air flights, boat trips, exotic vacations – reorient towards pilgrimage, restoring nature, and local outdoor adventures by foot.

* Get rid of most of your stuff, anything you have not touched in the past year.

* Avoid TV and canned entertainment

– instead get with friends and create living theater, sing, retell legends,
build musical instruments, dance, make art,
engage authentic transformational processes,
explore new territories of experience.

* Learn new communication skills; expand your abilities to be physically, intellectually, emotionally and spiritually intimate.

* Avoid the paradigm of money and adopt a local paradigm of creating abundance through giving to each other.

* Sell your stocks, securities and investments, and deal openly with your addiction to gambling.

* Divest your interests in buildings or land that you do not inhabit full-time.

* Direct your time and energy towards befriending and nurturing children, plants and animals, collaborating with your neighbors and effective organizations; celebrate together a lot.

* Change your orientation so that work is about what matters to you rather than working to pays the bills.

* Transform your relationship to fear so you can enter states of raw creation and invention.

* Implement cultural innovations that develop every person’s beneficial potential.

* Shift from increasing having to increasing being. Give presence rather than presents.

* Reorient towards personal development rather than personal possessions.

* Reorient from consuming to renewing the natural environment.

* Develop your capacity to experience and express love.

If you already see the perfect storm about to hit humanity and trust your own findings, then immediately and completely extricating yourself from the system that generates the problems is appropriate.

Let the system fail. It was not well thought out.

Our combined population growth and harmful technological waste products grew so quickly we did not have time to make other plans. By redirecting your incredible creative capacity towards generating sustainable culture then we Homo sapiens could be true to our name.

> What do you actually think about this? Does it make sense?

> What are you willing to say and do along these lines?

> What can you stop now? Next week? Next month?

> What do the people you know say and do about this?

> Many people criticize the idea of proactively collapsing the carbon economy.

> Are you ready to take action even if others won’t?

> How much longer will you wait before you replace talk with personal action?

> For creative collaboration and support in your choices
assemble a Just Stop Team www.just-stop.org.

Thank you for considering this.

Jews, Christians, Muslims, Buddists , etc.

I made a comment on the peace in our time thread that was taken out of context. I feel I need to rephrase that comment and explain what Religion means to me. The comment I made was That I disliked Jews.

I am A Christian by choice as is a Jew or Muslim, Buddist or any one of the many other religins. You are not born to the faith of any religion. Christ taught that you are either for God or against God. The Church teaches us that you serve one of only two masters. God or Satan , there is no other. Now in the case of Christian, Jew and Muslim we all serve the same God. The God of Abraham. Islam claims that Mohamad was the Saviour,Christians claim that Jesus Christ was the Saviour and the Jews do not belive the Saviour has come yet.

Salil, I do not hate the Jews or the Muslims, blacks or whites, reds or browns I love them all friends and enemies. The only enity I hate is Satan who by my belief has misled all other faiths including agnostics and atheists. I dislike all other religions not the people . It is thier deciever whom I despise.

Now if you were to put those three religions on trial in front of a judge and jury only the Christian faith would have enough evidence through the testimony to stand on its merits. Jesus Christ healed the sick, raised the dead and cast out Demons. He made the Blind to see and fed thousands with a couple of fish and a few loves of Bread. The Jews will do this soon. They will put Christ on trial again and this time they will realize the mistake that they made. They will repent.

So understand this, the Christian faith states that all other religions are of Satan whom we call the greatest liar of all time. The great deciever. We are not Bigots nor do we hate the people we feel have been misled . Our enemy is and always will be Satan. To hate the Jews or anyone else for that matter is to hate one of Gods people, misled or not we are to love our enemies(people we dislike) as we love our neighbors and we are to love our neighbors as we love ourselves. I hope this clears up my statement. Michael

producing, saving and trading open-pollinated seeds

(time to get back to relevant discussion)
i was wondering about the gardening practises of tribe members.
we grow over an acre of garden on our farm, and sell tonnes of tomatoes, cukes, corn and potatoes.
unfortunately, most corn seed is hybrid.
in a small plot well away from the main garden, i'm starting to grow a few heritage varieties of various veggies for seed production and eating, of course.
the plan is that next year, we will have enough to plant open-pollinated corn in the main garden. this year there are 30 fifty foot rows of corn, all hybrid. having a store of our own seeds will certainly come in handy. the gods alone know what the future holds for gardeners.

is anyone else thinking of seed collections?

http://www.libertygunrights.com/PublicLaw87-297.html

This not a conspiracy theory....this is public law. You can do your own
research to confirm.

Have you ever wondered why Congress wants to take away your firearms? Go to your local law library and ask the librarian to show you where the books for the United States Code are shelved. There are 25 books in the set and they are reddish-brown in color. Within Volume Nine you will find the answer in P.L. 87-297. (P.L. = public law)

OPEN VOLUME 9. The page numbers are in the center near the middle
binding. The section numbers are along the edges.

TURN TO PAGE 651. Here you will find Public Law 87-297 which calls for
the United States to eliminate its armed forces. This law was signed for
the United States in 1961. John F. Kennedy signed it and every president
since has worked to enact its provisions. The government knows you will
not approve which is why they want to take away your firearms. (This is
Title 22 USC section 2551)

TURN TO PAGE 652. Here you will find the definition of what the
government means by "disarmament. " The disarmament calls for the
elimination of our armed forces. It also calls for the elimination of
weapons of all kinds.

(This is Title 22 USC 2552 (a).

Remember Obama was a "Constitutional Lecturer"

TURN TO PAGE 654. Here you will find it stated as item (a) "control,
reduction and elimination of armed forces..." and as Item (d)"
...Elimination of armed forces...." What you need to know is that your
armed forces are being eliminated and relinquished from national control
which, in turn, wipes out our sovereignty as a nation. In two stages, we
will have no more army, no more navy, no more air force. In the third
stage, we shall have a "zero" military. Before Stage I closes, all
citizen owned guns are to be banned.

(This is Title 22 USC Section 2571 (a).

And to think they just launched the USS Bush, an Aircraft Carrier (Nimitz Class)

Public Law 87-297 is further explained in the State Department Document
called Publication 7277. Your librarian can also furnish you a copy.
Also ask the librarian to get you a copy of "The Blue Print for the
Peace Race." It is a 35-page booklet printed by the United States Arms
Control and Disarmament Agency as Publication No. 4 - General Series 3 -
Released May of 1962. Publication No. 4 is the unabridged version of
State Department Document 7277. (Your tax dollar funds a Disarmament Agency you ask?)

Both of these booklets explain how our military is to be reduced to 2.1
million men. China and the Soviets are to be reduced to that level also.
At this point, we are at Stage I at which time we are to transfer (on a
permanent basis) one-half of our armed forces to be merged with the
Russian and Chinese armies. In Stage II, the remaining one-half of our
armed forces is then turned over to this same Security Council of the
United Nations. The person in charge of the merged armies must, by
agreement, always be a Russian. The world's smaller nations turn 100% of their armies over to the same under-secretary of the Security, Council
in Stage II. President George Bush and Admiral Wm. J. Crowe [have
referred] to this process as being "in transition."

TURN TO PAGE 655. On this page in Volume 9 of the United States Code,
read "Policy Formation." The directives there (written in 1963 to pacify
objectors) are supposedly to restrain anyone from disarmament, reducing or limiting our armaments, or taking guns away from the people unless it is pursuant to the treaty-making power of the president, or if it is authorized by further legislation by the Congress. (This is title 22,
Section 2573.)

Every couple of years the House of Representatives votes to appropriate
funds for this on-going program. Since P.L. 87-297 was first passed into
law in 1961, there have been 18 updates to it - all bad - with no
deletions of these issues I lay before you now. The Congress knows that
the plan includes the policing of the United States by foreign troops.
(The world army they are forming in Europe .) The Congress is allowing
our military bases to be closed down, except for those that will be used
by the world army. You will find that plan in Publication 7277 and in
"The Blueprint for the Peace Race."

If the president and Congress can promote a "Constitutional Convention"
you will find yourself with two new constitutions (communist in
structure) which in one states in Article VIII, Section 12: "No person
shall bear arms or possess lethal weapons except the police and members of the armed forces...."

The Congress has praised these documents and is on record in Senate
hearings seeking ways to install these constitutions. Ask your librarian
for "Revision of the United Nations Charter - Hearings Before a
Subcommittee (Foreign Relations) Feb. 2-20, 1950 U.S.Government Printing Office." Nothing has changed since. They are still viable. The ultimate goal to be reached in Stage III of the disarmament process is to
"proceed to a point where no state [nation] would have the military
power to challenge the progressively strengthened U.N. Peace Force...."

Anyone who doubts the truthfulness of what has been presented here is
free to go to the library and go through the steps which have been
outlined above. While you are at it, look up Public Law 101-216.

I finally got my copies of "Patriots" from Amazon this last week while I was in FL. It's a good and easy read, and the scenario is very much like what we are going through economically right now. I think tha it is one everyone should have, as JWR has thinly veiled the sources for many of the products he mentions in the novel. I've googled some and they are authentic-so if you can afford $15, I'd buy the book if I were you.

Survival Fitness

yes, again! Don't push it out of your mind. Working out your body sucks, sure. But you never know when you're going to need it.

Just yesterday I went on a little hike with my wife. We went exploring up a canyon wall which was mostly cliffs of about 40-60 feet, interspersed with sloping terraces full of pines. Usually a rockslide or crevase in the rock strata would be a good ladder between the terraces.

We kept getting distracted by the bald eagles, the peregrin falcons swooping at us to ward us away from the cliffs we would walk where their nests must have been. Wild flowers and lizards and grand views soon gave way to evening, worsening weather, and us, about 1,000 feet up the canyon wall and way too many miles along to retrace our steps before getting caught in the dark in bad weather.

Making a new, more expedient way down was working well until one particular terrace, which dropped off about 45 feet to the next one down and there were no more rockslides, no more crevases, nothing to span the distance. We were up shit-creek, stuck on a strip of dirt in the middle of a cliff with a setting sun and cold wind picking up. To make a long story short, the safest place i was able to scout, to scale down to the next terrace was a spot with some rough rock (some handholds and footholds) about twenty feet high and involving some underhang and a little side-scrambling along the cliff before connecting to more descendable rock patterns.

Well, needless to say, we did it and we got down the canyon quickly and safely before the weather turned sour and us without any jackets. I've done that kind of thing many times before, but i can't tell you how impressed I was with my wife, who is afraid of heights and had never even been to an indoor rock climbing gymnasium or attempted anything similar before. We work hard to keep our bodies in good useable shape and there's no greater reward for your hard work than to see and feel your body pull through with the strength and balance you need when confronted with a real physical challenge, like hanging by finger-holds twenty feet up, no climbing gear, and no previous experience (in her case)... I did climb down to make sure it was passable, and then climb back up and lead her to make sure her footings were secure and help her with each move.

Conversely, there are few sicker, more sinking feelings than to be confronted with a real survival challenge and realize too late that your physical condition isn't up to the task...

How's your physical conditioning coming along?

Good rural-life practicalities discussions on Web?

Hello, all. My interests and skills overlap quite a bit with those of many people who adhere to preparedness and survivalist philosophies.

I’m posting this to ask about homestead and small-farm (forum-type) Web sites.

One of the ones I’ve found that has some good discussion about practicalities is the GardenWeb “Homesteading” forum. I’ve seen threads there sharing info about keeping chickens, buying land, buying tractors, making the transition to rural life, homesteading technology (tools & equipment sources), small engines, keeping kids focused & happy, and MANY other topics. http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/homest/

I have over 25 years’ experience living in a mountain valley. I’d like to find some more good Web sites on the day-to-day practicalities. Though the politics, current events, and possible disruptive dangers do interest me, they’re not my chief concern.

Know of some good homestead or small-farm sites that are pretty active?

Goals - week ending 06-07-09

For those of us in the throes of panic, I thought maybe a thread on weekly goals might have a calming effect. It would help focus us newbies and maybe somebody else's goals would give new / fresh ideas.

I'll start. This will be a short list due to other parts of life needing attention.

a. Stop calling all this *survival prep*. It's simply a different way of looking at, and living, life.

b. Consider the cost vs benefit of dehydrating strawberries myself. ;-) The 3 pounds I dried yesterday netted about 3 ounces. Research / cost compare online companies for dried fruits.

c. Continue working on menus for a 3-month period. This is how I'm finding the gaps in my pantry.

Anybody else want to play along??

It was Mojos birthday Saturday and he actually was home this weekend. So in the midst of all the birthday celebrating we were talking about..... yep you guessed it..... SURVIVAL..... again. This time the conversations turned to hand to hand combat. Mojo knows a little martial arts, don't ask me which style 'cause I don't know, I'll have to ask him. Anyway, I have no training, just my natural instincts to punch as fast and as hard as I can until someone is down for the count. Not terribly reliable or skilled. Personally I would like to be the one still standing when the fight is over.

So we are wondering what your experiences or opinions are on fighting. Is there a particular form/style that you feel is highly effective? One better than the other? What do you wish you had trained in? Come on everyone, I know there are some strong opinions out there and most likely some skilled/trained fighters too. Share your thoughts on this please.

What about the working poor? How do we do it?

I have been wondering about the working poor for a long time. Mostly because we are the working poor. Making under $30,000 a year now days it's hard to make it day to day with the high cost of everything. Surviving from paycheck to paycheck can be a big struggle.

I have been reading everything I can get my hands on about survival and self sufficiency from the library. Every one makes our list of things to do and get ever longer. Today I'm in the middle of reading Patriots by James Wesley Rawles (thanks to the oh so generous loan from a friend). All of the main characters here are in the higher income brackets of $58,000 and above per year, and have had 10 years to get ready for the coming chaos as individuals and as a group. So they are very well prepared and well able to make it for years on their own.

So here's my question..... How do we without that kind of income (and partners) find the resources to be prepared for survival? When you can't afford most things that other people have, there isn't any money left over. So how do we do it?

We've all ran into them at some point... family or friends who think we are absolutely crazy for even thinking about "that stupid survival stuff". Always with a snide comment and a "yea but" for everything you have to say or everything you do, maybe even trying to sabatage (spelling?) your efforts. They completely refuse to try to understand your point of view and what you're trying to accomplish. They don't get it, so they think you are insane. How do you handle them? Especially the people you know personally and can't just decide to never see them again. Do you just avoid the topic of survival? What do you tell them? Survival has become such a big part of who I am now that I can't just never mention it again. What do you do?

1) loose tobacco & papers (no sense buying expensive cig packs & pipes can be made out of anything when you run out of papers)
2) spices (survival food tends to be bland food)
3) lighters or other inexpensive means to start fires
4) silver pieces

How did you prioritize your emergency situations?

I'm following the advice of prioritizing emergency situations to keep from being overwhelmed by trying to prepare for all situations, all at the same time. ""...that way lies madness.""

Brief list, starting with the simplest / "mildest"
1. simple (as in no SHTF scenario) power outages (tree down across power lines, etc) - summer and winter - fairly well prepared for several hours up to several days
2. physical damage to home (trees down, lightning, fire, etc) - woefully unprepared for any of this
3. loss of income, partial or full - this is where the bulk of my efforts have been for the last few months, stocking up the pantry / household goods

I'd like to see your emergency priority lists as a way to jump start my brain so I can add to my list.

Over the years I keep hearing people mention the whole "implanting a chip in humans thing" where they say there are warehouses that store them, etc. I guess like the pet-chips or whatever. And sometimes I find these Ident-a-kid things in my daughter's bag with a little instructions book to save her prints and hair. This must be from when she stays with my husbands parents. It's in there along with the chick-fil-a and junk foods. I am adamantly opposed to that kind of stuff though and I have to draw a line somewhere.

Anyhow, what's the scoop? Logically no one would stand up and say yeah, please stick that in me so i can go shopping, but...?
Existing? No? Are Texans the only ones that every talk about the "Amero" :) because we're on/are the 'Trans-Texas Corridor?' [Nothing like paying to drive on roads built that we'd already paid for. Even cooler when they receive federal $ to fund the aforementioned roads built by "private corporations." But I digress...]

What kind of land would *you* buy?

My husband and I are buying a nice sized piece of property to relocate to. I'm wondering, from a survivalist perspective, what would *you* look for when buying land and what do you consider ideal, what are necessities, etc...

For reference, what we are buying is of course not "ideal", but was the best we could find in the area we wanted and within our price range. It actually has almost everything we wanted, with the exception of a natural full time source of water (ie lake, pond, natural spring) but it does have several seasonal creeks. It is 35 acres at 5500 feet elevation, entirely tree'd raw land (very mountainous with several ridges and valleys but little pasture area) with the exception of the home and another graded area for a second house to be built. it has a great road, is only accessible through one road which is several miles off the "main" road, and is in a very sparsely populated area of the sierra nevada mountains (CA). the surrounding ranches are not too close and there seems to be a lot of survival minded people out there. We're not total strangers moving to the area, my husband and I both grew up close by and we have several friends with land/ ranches in the area. The land is covered with oaks and pines, large boulders, and an overabundance of wildlife (black bear, mountain lion, deer, wild boar, badger, bobcat, coyote, wild turkey, quail, etc, etc, etc...) The soil is absolutely amazing and here is also a large lake and river within a short driving distance (15 minutes or so). The home is an older double wide but we are actually putting a new one there before we move in. There is electricity already there, a great well and septic already in place.. The nearest town is about 25 miles and has a pop. of 2000. the nearest large city is 55 miles and has a pop. of 350,000.

The one thing that scares me just a little is the wildlife..the mountain lions are so abundant it's kinda scary and there have been several bear attacks in the immediate area in the last two years. We'll have 2 small children, guineas, goats, and our pack of dogs to worry about. Protecting my children is of course what concerns me the most, and not being able to let them play outdoors freely. But I wouldn't do that here in the city either, just a different kind of predator I suppose..

What would you look for/ consider when buying land? What factors should be considered? Any advice on moving to a very remote area would be greatly appreciated!

I'm accustomed to being aware of my surroundings in parking lots and large crowds, etc. Sadly, this awareness has more to do with being a woman than anything else. But yesterday, after watching the news of a carjacking in a moderately busy gas station (there was video) - where an armed man threatened a pregnant woman and her other child - I had to add yet another area to my *watch*. Frankly, I've never thought about being carjacked at a gas station. And interestingly enough, my mind went into assessment mode without much effort.

I know this may be a silly post to some - you've been there / done that - but it feels like a "milestone" to me. ;-) I'm still learning how to cope with a heightened sense of "oh, s&*#%$$" without living in panic mode 24/7.

Yesterday I had a thought slam into my head...and it's a doozy. What with the swine flu panic, etc, etc...what if it's *not* the golden horde from the city I've got to deal with, but the family members right around the corner who, I strongly suspect, haven't put any thought into "what would happen if...."?

I've had to fight myself all morning to not raid the stashed cash - rush to the nearest wholesale club and buy stuff. I need to confirm one way or the other.

I know this is something I've got to work out for myself. And just when I thought I had a good gripe on things....

Food Storage Questions

I get kind of baffled and overwhelmed with the whole food storage business. I've been going at it sort of slow...building up from what we have. So i have some questions I thought I'd ask if that's alright :D I've been perusing sites as I am able but thought you guys might have experiences to share?

So now I want to package a variety of and beans for long term storage. I used to buy cans and then thought "gosh, I could make them without all the sodium, get as natural as possible," and all that. i have some 5 gallon buckets and some mylar bags and some air eliminator things (like silica packets or whatever). Can i make small, maybe 1 lb. bags of my favorite beans and stick them in a container with labels? I thought that way i could maximize the variety i package per container at one time. it's all stuff i like to make for our dinners to begin with and a container of multi options sounds like a great thing. also, the O2 absorbers - i was reading to stick them in the mylar of each bag and then seal, but does that still go for the small bags? should i just do massive big bags? I thought the less to open per time the better...but this is why i am asking you guys for assistance :D i did get some gamma lids so i could reseal the aforementioned containers...

i also want to package white rice. so far it's been hanging out on top of the fridge, but it needs a more permanent home for the moment.
oh, i also forgot...i am freezing my beans in the freezer for many days to try and eliminate the internal pests of the bags for hatching later (eeew.)- is that suitable or do i need a better method?

I just found out about this about five minutes ago. I don't watch the vidiscreen anymore so am somewhat out of the loop. But apparently there's a flu coming in from Mexico, and people are dying, and it's spreading all over the world in a hurry.

Many good intentions. Too few achievements.

We are living in a profoundly interesting world. Living in very interesting times. There are so many possibilities of differing cataclysmic events, based in so much science, and in so many Prophesies, that may bring about an "end times".

To me, these are serious days. We still have time to prepare for what is coming. ...Just what that may be, we can not say with a great deal of assurance. But it can include economic meltdown, pandemics, civil disorder, terrorist strikes, the walking of evil on Earth, and more. We may even now be in the early stages of several of these. But there is still a bit of time to prepare.

I think that likely within the next few years, maybe even in the next few months, it will become necessary for people to gather in communities in order to survive. For most people, that will be a very stressful change in their lives. If they have not already learned how to conduct themselves, their chances of survival will be greatly reduced.

One of the things that I have liked about "Tribes" is that it provides the opportunity to learn some of the skills that will be needed in the coming days. We can talk to each other and give advice about all sorts of concerns, such as gardening, animal husbandry, food storage, etc. We can also learn how to communicate with diverse people, and simply learn how to get along. Unfortunately, there have been some people, like "mitch", who, imho, just want to spread distraction.

Right now, we Americans have a certain luxury of a stable and peaceful society. We can act stupid if we wish, with little consequence. We can say things and do things that in a less agreeable society would get us very quickly hurt. That is something to be mindful of. Presently, if we shoot off our mouths, make jokes, display ill humor, there's little likelyhood of repercussion. But soon, how we behave can mean survival. Say the wrong thing, give the wrong look, and the reaction could be fatal.

That is why I have found some of the behavior in Tribes to be so puzzling, even ignorant. We have a chance to prepare for what is so manifestly coming. We can learn the skills, both in a mechanical sense and in a behavioral sense, that can help keep us alive. To do less is to really say that we just playing at the "what ifs".

My suggestion to us all is that we get more serious. It's easy to be offensive. Wasting time with endless banter of a non-productive nature is to rob ourselves, and the severals of others who may read these posts hoping for guidance, of opportunities to learn.
It takes work to conduct ourselves in ways that enhance our ability to survive. We can either work to inform and bring together people to help each other to survive, or we can just continue to play silly games, and help no one. Time is short. Let's put away the school yard little boy behavior, and start to make an attempt to make real achievements.

Hard days are surely coming. What will you do to make ready ?

I live in Southwestern Indiana. Are there any " survival" minded people living near by ( Evansville area) ? I would like to maybe meet or talk to others in my area to share ideas, work together to prepare for when TSHTF. I have learned a lot in the last 7-8 years since I pulled my head out of my a#% and started seeing what is happening around me and in the world. I am not a "gun nut" just a guy that believes in taking care of my own and preparing for the worse while hoping for the best. Any body else out there? You can e-mail me at specops@wowway.com or post here and I'll reply. Don

i just quadrupled the output of my solar panels!

pretty pleased with new developments. a friend just installed his own design for a robotics tracking system to my solar panel array.
(the commercially available tracking systems aren't very effective at higher latitudes. i'm at 56n)
i have fair output at 390 watts max, but i never had a tracker before. normally a couple of hours of charge tops the batteries, so i haven't worried about it. however, now that the tracker gives me several more hours of charge, it's time to built a good diversion load.

a freezer. (i live without fridge and freezer and have for many years, but a freezer will mean a lot less canning. pretty nice to have room to stash a moose!) i've planned it for years, but now i can build one. a super insulated box, outside, in full shade and a 'nova cool, 12v compressor and cooling panels, make a super efficient freezer. the beauty of soalr power is that when i need maximum freezing, i have maximum sun. (we have 18 hour days in june). in winter, we have -30 to -50 commonly. that oughta be able to keep shit frozen.

actually, in winter we do have a freezer....the BIG one.stuff in a cooler says for weeks, but this will allow more storage of frozen veggies from the garden, chickens and lamb from the pasture, and moose and deer from the yard.

i should have my freezer up and running by late fall. man, moose steaks on the barby in july. too cool.

Survivalists wanted to TV doc series

Hello there,
I am looking to talk to any people or communities who identify as survivalists, and might be interested in getting involved in a documentary series.

I am particularly interested to talk to anyone who might own a bunker, or have plans to build one.

If this sounds like you then I would be grateful if you could contact me on rachel@bullseyetv.co.uk or 44 020 8600 3700, and hopefully we can go from there.

Many thanks,
Rachel.
